Some working coal miners in Appalachia now suffering from incurable black lung disease at a rate not seen since the 1970s. Howard Berkus reports on the key findings in a new study from federal researchers.
You have to go back to 1978 to find the same rate of black lung disease, more than 30%, for working coal miners in Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia, who spent more than 24 years underground. That's what epidemiologists found at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health when testing coal miners in the last five years. Scott Laney led the research.
