The storm Gabrielle has officially become a hurricane as it moves past the island of Bermuda. It now has top winds of up to seventy five miles an hour right now.

US weather officials say that the storm is expected to undergo rapid intensification over the next day or so. And as NPR's Matt Bloom reports, parts of the eastern US could feel some impacts from Gabriel.
The National Weather Service says the chances of direct landfall in Bermuda are decreasing, but the island could still see heavy rainfall and winds through the beginning of this week. Gabrielle is not expected to hit the U.S. mainland, but meteorologists say parts of the East Coast, including North Carolina and New England, could see swells in dangerous rip currents. Gabrielle is the seventh named storm of this year's Atlantic season, only two of which have strengthened into hurricanes. While at least one tropical storm has made landfall in the U.S., no hurricane this season has directly struck the mainland. The season lasts through the end of November. Map Bloom, NPR News.
