Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. New Jersey Governor Mike E. Sherrill has declared a state of emergency for the state's coastal communities. A nor'easter is bringing high winds, heavy rains, and large waves to the region. In declaring the emergency, Sherrill urged people to take the storm seriously and stay alerts.
With this state of emergency, what that means is we will surge resources to these communities, making sure that the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Transportation are manning our operations centers because of beach erosion and the high tide and the roads that we are concerned about.
Thousands of people are now without power in the region while roads are flooding in some coastal New Jersey communities. Hurricane Nolo is Hawaii's big island in its sights, the National Weather Service says tropical storm conditions are expected late tonight, with winds gusting to fifty miles an hour and as much as ten to fifteen inches of rain. And Hurricane Polo is now a category five storm and is expected to make landfall in the Baja California peninsula.

The Supreme Court has for now revived a federal data system the Trump administration revamped into a tool to check the citizenship of millions of registered voters. As NPR's Jude Joffy Block reports, the tool had been used by some states before it was blocked by a federal judge for violating privacy protections.
The federal tool is called Save, and the Trump administration made major changes to it last year, including linking it to Social Security data for the first time. But the tool has mistakenly flagged some US citizens as potential non citizens, leading them to be taken off state voter rolls as a result. A federal judge in June said the modified version of SAVE trampled on the privacy rights of Americans and threatened the right to vote. But the Supreme Court lifted that block and opened the door for the new SAVE tool to be used in the lead up to the election for individualized determinations of citizenship.
