Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Support for NPR and the following message come from the estate of Joan B. Kroc, whose bequest serves as an enduring investment in the future of public radio and seeks to help NPR produce programming that meets the highest standards of public service in journalism and cultural expression.
Live from NPR News in New York City, I'm Duahli Saikautau.
Chapter 2: What recent military actions did the U.S. take in Nigeria?
The number of casualties from last night's surprise attacks by the U.S. military in Nigeria is not yet known. The strikes come a couple of months after President Trump threatened on social media to go into Africa's most populous country, quote, guns a-blazing, unless it did more to protect innocent Christians who he asserts are being persecuted. NPR Africa correspondent Emmanuel Akinwotu reports.
The U.S. Africa Command, who are in charge of military operations on the continent, they put it differently.
Chapter 3: How is Ukraine's war situation developing with President Zelensky?
In a statement they said initially the strikes were requested by the Nigerian government and then they amended that statement to say it was done in coordination with them. But in any case, this is clearly a really significant intervention and an inflection point in Nigeria. US military involvement in Nigeria.
And it also comes with the religious symbolism of launching these strikes on Christmas Day.
The U.S. strikes targeted ISIS militants in northwest Nigeria along the border with Niger. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he expects to meet with President Trump on Sunday.
Chapter 4: What impact did recent storms have in Southern California?
The talks will be aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. NPR's Joannika Kicis reports Russia is examining the latest version of a peace proposal negotiated by the U.S.
and Kyiv. Zelensky wrote on social media that, quote, a lot can be decided before the new year. Territorial issues remain the most sensitive.
Chapter 5: What details emerged about the seized oil tanker in Iran?
Earlier this week, Zelensky said he was open to withdrawing Ukrainian troops from the eastern region of Donbass, as long as Russia also pulled back its troops. Ukraine controls about a quarter of this region. The Trump administration is proposing turning this portion into a free economic zone. Volodymyr Polovyi, a soldier whose unit is stationed in Donbass,
says Russia has been trying to occupy the region for more than a decade.
Chapter 6: How is the U.S. preparing for its 250th birthday celebrations?
And during that time, he says, Russia signed peace and ceasefire agreements and did not respect them. Joanna Kakissis, NPR News, Kiev.
In Southern California, more rain is expected today, but it appears the worst may be over, as Steve Vetterman reports.
The latest storms are not expected to be as powerful as the storms the last two days. Those have caused extensive damage.
Chapter 7: What changes are planned for New Year's Eve celebrations this year?
In some locations, more than 12 inches of rain has fallen. Many roads have been turned into a muddy mess. A number of water rescues have taken place. Several deaths have been reported. There is still a heightened awareness in both Pacific Palisades and Altadena, the two areas hit hardest in the January wildfires.
Those locations are experiencing mudslides and debris flows as adjacent mountains have little if any vegetation to hold the soil in place. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in Los Angeles. And you're listening to NPR from New York City.
Iranian state media says authorities there seized an oil tanker that was carrying fuel intended to be smuggled out of Iran and sold at higher prices abroad. And Piers Ayabachar reports the crew of 16 foreigners was also detained.
Iran's state news agency, IRNA, quoted a senior naval commander as saying the ship was carrying four million liters of smuggled Iranian fuel when it was seized in Iranian territorial waters earlier this week. He says the tanker is part of an organized fuel smuggling network that was planning to offload the fuel outside Persian Gulf waters for sale at higher prices abroad.
He did not identify the nationalities of the 16 crew members who were detained, only that they are not Iranian citizens. Fuel in Iran is subsidized and the local currency has depreciated, making oil smuggling a lucrative business when sold abroad at higher prices. Another tanker smuggling Iranian fuel was seized only weeks ago, authorities say.
For the first time in its 120-year tradition, Times Square will feature a second ball drop, glimmering in red, white, and blue. This is to mark the first of many celebrations, big and small, across the country to mark the nation's 250th birthday. The bipartisan group America 250 is organizing birthday events throughout 2026.
Its chair, Rosie Rios, told reporters, it's going to be the most inspirational celebration this country and maybe the world has ever seen. The changes to this year's New Year's Eve ceremonies will also include a second confetti drop of patriotic colors. I'm Dwali Saikautau, NPR News.
