I'm Reid Lutanen, Executive Director of the U.S. Faster Payments Council, and this is Off the Rails from the U.S. Faster Payments Council. Today I'm talking with Donna Blum of BHMI and Tony Cook of First Bank as we dive deep into the world of payments reconciliation and the work that Donna and Tony have been doing within the FPC's Operational Considerations Workgroup. But first, the headlines. Registration is open for the FPC Spring Member Meeting in April 23rd and 24th at the beautiful Westin Bayview in San Diego. This event is such a great opportunity to hear from experts who are making things happen, talk about the issues that matter for advancing faster payments, and have fun with friends. And the Clearinghouse.
Reed Luhtanen 1:24
And if you're interested in sponsoring, please reach out to us. We have an amazing list of sponsors, as you just heard already. And we would love to add you to that list as well. And you'll be hearing about these guys for the next few months. So get your brand in that mix and help us out. Also, since we last spoke, another deliverable came out of FEC's workgroups. This time it was a joint effort from our financial inclusion workgroup, which is sponsored by ACI Worldwide and the Digital Assets Workgroup. The paper examines how digital assets and digital ledger technology can address financial exclusion and improve access to essential financial services. You can check that out, as always, on FasterPaymentsCouncil.org.

Under the Knowledge Center tab, click on Resources, and you'll find it there. And with that, let's jump right into that discussion with Tony and Donna.
Reed Luhtanen 2:25
All right. We're joined by Donna Blum from BHMI and Tony Cook from First Bank. Thanks for joining us today, guys.
Donna Blum 2:32
Thanks for having me.
Reed Luhtanen 2:33
Yeah, thank you. All right. I think we should start off with introductions so everyone in the audience gets a sense of who you guys are. And so, Donna, why don't you start? Tell us a bit about BHMI and the things you're focused on there and kind of what's going on from your perspective right now.
Donna Blum 2:48
Sure. So I'm the software sales director at BHMI. And BHMI is really best known for our Concourse Financial Software Suite, which is a modular back office payments processing platform. And it's actually used by some of the leading financial institutions around the globe. You might not have recognized our name, but you would recognize their names. Essentially, Concourse is ideally suited for organizations that process millions of payment transactions every day. and they have very diverse and complex back office needs. Our system supports both issuers and acquirers and any type of card or non-card transactions. So it includes credit, debit, ATM, POS, mobile, P2P, and of course, instant payments. I think really what's distinctive about Concourse is that it does process
Donna Blum 3:45
Transactions in real time. So we've been doing real time now for over 20 years, long before real time or instant payments were even a reality. And it really solves the back office bottleneck that's caused by legacy batch systems. And the world really is demanding real-time payments, so we need to figure out a way to resolve the batch process in the back office. So it's essentially a modern, automated, real-time, rules-based system that performs functions like settlement, reconciliation, chargeback management, and allocates fees and commissions. I would say that probably the thing that's most important to know about concourse is is that it will process instant payments alongside of all of those traditional payment types.
Donna Blum 4:41
So it really enables the financial institutions to evolve.
Reed Luhtanen 4:48
Right, right. And we're definitely going to get into quite a bit about that back office piece and the reconciliation, which is a bit of a theme for the conversation we're about to have. But before we get into that, Tony, talk about First Bank, your role at the bank, and why faster and instant payments are such an important part of your strategy.
Tony Cook 5:06
Sure. Yeah, thanks, Reed. So I'm an executive vice president at First Bank in Colorado, where I've been for almost 17 years in a number of roles in and out of payments, but I've spent a lot of that time working in instant payments and helping bring instant payments to First Bank and our customers.
