I am Reid Lutanen, Executive Director of the U.S. Faster Payments Council, and this is Off the Rails from the U.S. Faster Payments Council. Today's episode is with Philippa Wilson of MasterCard. Philippa and I talk about the wide range of things going on in faster payments, how emerging tech such as AI will play a role, and how the NBA playoffs might shake out. But first, the headlines. One more thank you to all of our member meeting event sponsors, ACI Worldwide, Alloya Corporate Federal Credit Union, BNY, Endava, ePay Resources, Finsley, Form 3, Shazam, MasterCard, SRM, North American Banking Company, Trustly, and The Clearinghouse. The spring member meeting could not have gone better, and a lot of that is thanks to the support of these great sponsors.

And if you're interested in sponsoring future events and member meetings, please reach out to us at info at fasterpaymentscouncil.org. Looking ahead to the fall, I'm thrilled to be speaking at a number of industry events throughout the conference season. And FPC will be exhibiting and speaking at additional events as well. So we look forward to seeing people out and about. In the meantime, we have an exciting announcement regarding the fall member meeting. We have lined up new dates. The event will still be in Portland, Maine at the Westin Harborview. The new dates are September 3rd and 4th. That's the Wednesday and Thursday after Labor Day. So for those of you looking for an early fall getaway, plan for a weekend in Portland before we kick off the meeting.

The call for session proposals is live at FasterPaymentsCouncil.org, and we'll be sending out the link to book your hotel room and register for the event very soon. If you do want to come early for the holiday weekend, we can get the hotel to extend that group rate for you. Just let us know. New deliverable alert! The prolific FPC Directory Models Workgroup released its latest report, Decision Points for an Open Alias Directory Report, which presents critical considerations for the development of an open, alias-based directory service that could simplify and accelerate faster payments in the United States. The report builds on the group's prior foundational work on directory services, offering tangible insights into how such a system might operate in practice.
Reed Luhtanen 2:31
It explores architectural frameworks, implementation models, and key decision points, such as the type of alias values that can be used, how alias ownership can be established, and how queries and responses should be structured. As always, you can find that and a ton of other valuable resources at the FPC's Knowledge Center. Go to fasterpaymentscouncil.org, click on the Knowledge Center tab, click on Resources. And with that, let's get to the conversation with Philippa Wilson from MasterCard.
Reed Luhtanen 3:13
All right. We're here with Philippa Wilson from MasterCard. Philippa, thanks for joining us.
Phillipa (Philippa) Wilson 3:18
Thanks for having me, Reid.
Reed Luhtanen 3:20
All right.

Who is Phillipa Wilson and how is Mastercard involved in faster payments?

Reed Luhtanen 3:21
It's great to have you on the show and really at an interesting time. And we're going to talk about some of the stuff that's going on. But before we jump into that, I did think it would make some sense for our audience to hear from you about how MasterCard is fitting into the whole faster payments world, because you guys really have a lot of different things going on. So kind of give us the kind of overview of where you guys are playing in this space.
Phillipa (Philippa) Wilson 3:41
Great. Thanks for that. I'm happy to talk about the things that we are doing here at MasterCard. And I would also argue to say through MasterCard's history from its inception around cards and credit cards and debit cards, one might consider those a version of a faster payment. If you think about that, the first payment we were replacing was a check. And so we've continued very much to build on the network that's been developed that has enabled individuals and businesses to transact using cards and thought about how that continues to evolve as our times have evolved, right? So Back in 2016, MasterCard acquired a company called Vocalink that developed the software that was used for the UK faster payment system and took that technology and has expanded it to other markets around the world, along with an acquisition in the Nordics that we did from a business called Nets.
