Off the rails from the U.S. Faster Payments Council.

I am Reid Lutanen, CEO of the U.S. Faster Payments Council, and this is Off the Rails from the U.S. Faster Payments Council. Today we're finally being joined by the one and only Kevin, the payments professor Olson, who is Senior Vice President, Innovation and Strategy at Pigeon. Kevin and I talk a lot about stablecoins, so you can consider this a 101 on stablecoins from the professor, and some NACHA rules changes and his thoughts on NASCAR sprinkled in as well. But first, the headlines. FPC's spring member meeting and ePay Connect kick off on Monday, February 23rd. FPC members will receive a 50% discount on attendance at ePay Connect. And of course, FPC members pay only $50 per person to attend our member meetings.
Reed Luhtanen 1:15
ePay attendees, if you're listening, you are also eligible for 50% off guest attendance at the FPC member meeting. So you can add on nearly two full days of CE-eligible sessions for less than $400. It's a great opportunity to interact with our members, get those CE credits that I just talked about, and learn about the state of the art when it comes to faster payments. And ePay attendees, even if you cannot attend our full event, we really encourage you to stay for our free afternoon workshops on February 25th. There you can expect an interactive session designed to help financial institutions understand and navigate the rapidly evolving real-time payments landscape. Led by Sean Devaney from CGI, this session will be tailored for organizations looking at how to take advantage of the new real-time payment rails.
Reed Luhtanen 2:01
The session will break down the functional differences between FedNow and RTP, outline what it takes to onboard each session, and demonstrate how real-time capabilities can unlock treasury operational and customer experience benefits. Through practical use cases, comparisons with consumer payment platforms and insights from global fraud prevention models, attendees will gain a clear, actionable roadmap for evaluating and implementing instant payments. This is an opportunity to build knowledge, ask questions and prepare your institution to compete effectively in a real time world. These sessions are open to FPC members as well. So join us. As always, you can learn more about the FPC member meeting and register by heading to fasterpaymentscouncil.org.

You can find a link toward the top of the page in the banner, or you can click on news and events and then FPC events to navigate that way. And we love to announce that we have new resources from our workgroups. The Value of ISO 20022 for U.S. B2B Instant Payments is a blog post published by the FPC's Business Benefits of B2B Instant Payments workgroup that highlights how ISO 20022 enables richer data, improved reconciliation, and greater interoperability, making it a critical foundation for scalable B2B instant payments. Find that at FasterPaymentsCouncil.org. Click on Education and then Publications and Resources. And in that same spot, you can find another recent deliverable also from that B2B work group, B2B Instant Payments plus e-invoicing, A Perfect Marriage.
Reed Luhtanen 3:28
It explains how pairing instant payments with e-invoicing can automate the B2B payment lifecycle, reduce manual late work, and improve visibility and control over invoices and payments. And with that, let's get to that conversation with Kevin Olson from Pigeon.
Reed Luhtanen 4:03
All right. We're joined by Kevin, the payments professor Olson from Pigeon. Kevin, welcome.
Kevin Olsen 4:09
Hey, thanks for eating. I'm glad to be here.
Reed Luhtanen 4:11
All right. I wanted to spend the bulk of our time today talking about something that I'm sure our listeners, a word I'm sure listeners have never heard and something that you maybe aren't even familiar with, but we're talking about stable coins. So I feel like this is a topic, you know, I consistently seem to feel like I know just enough to know that I'm maybe not quite getting it. You know, I guess it's a feeling that you probably can't relate to, Professor. Anyway, would you mind starting with just a high-level description of what a stablecoin is?
