What is the opening preview and schedule for the Oil Kings segment?
Hey, it's Bob Stoffer. I just wanted to let you know that you can listen to Oilers Now ad-free on Amazon Music, included with Prime.
Bob will be back at three thirty today. That is uh that is the number. I'm I'm confused with time zones. It's a one hour difference in Winnipeg, but it's been throwing me off all day. Hopefully I didn't text any of the wrong times to the potential guests on oilers now today, that'd be a problem. But I think I think we're free and clear. I think we're okay in that situation. All right, the Edmonton Oilkings opened up their season over the weekend. They picked up a win in Red Deer over the Rebels. They won it four to two and uh overtime loss at the hands of the Calgary Hitman in the home opener. Four to three was the final. It did take extra time. The Oil Kings actually held a lead in the third period, just unable to sustain it, and ultimately succame, but uh or succumbed rather.
Um But uh yeah, we get into it because it's uh it's time for the Oil Kings report brought to you by Sherwood Power Sports and Marine, your home for boats, ATV, motorbikes, and all the gear you need. This is a pre-taped conversation. We never lie to ya on Oilers now. Here is Oil Kings head coach, Jason Smith. Okay, now joined by the head coach of the Edmonton Oil Kings, Jason Smith. Jason, uh fun weekend for the team. I appreciate you taking some time out of your day to talk to us a little bit about it.
Oh no, thanks for having me. I uh was a good uh good start to the a good start to the year and uh obviously a exciting uh weekend for our uh our group, especially our uh younger guys and uh new guys to the league.
Yeah, for sure. And you come out of the first two games with three points, which is definitely very solid. A big win in Red Deer and then unfortunately losing in overtime against the Calgary Hitman. But that was a really, really good game. I just wanna get your overall thoughts on those two games before we get too into it.
Well I I think obviously the f the first game in in Red Deer, uh there was some nerves and we didn't probably start the game uh the way we would have liked, I think, uh but uh you know, we got through the first period, uh Uh Ethan Simcoe was really good in the net for us and and g made some saves and kept us in the game there and then we got some traction as the game went on. I thought our guys were started to uh you know, generate and and play uh play the type of game that we wanna play. We were good on the fork check, hard on the you know, hard uh hard in the battles and uh were able to capitalize on some opportunities and and come out of there with a win and then The game at home was uh you know, home over we kinda started the game similar to the
Uh game in red there we probably a little nervous and uh Squeezing the sticks a little bit, but but the game itself was uh much more of a complete game and uh you know it was a it was a well played game by both teams.
Yeah, and back to Simco. I mean forty one shots stopped in Red Deer. He was a huge factor for your team. It's his third season with the club. I just want to get your thoughts on how his development has come along and how ready he was for the start of this season.
You know what? I think uh you know, I think he had a good summer and through training camp he was uh you know, kinda dialed in and and comfortable and uh you know, focused. I think uh you know, that's a big part of uh uh our team this year is gonna be the stability uh in uh in uh in our goaltending and uh you know we're looking forward to to seeing Parker Snell get back and play as well. But if we can have, you know quality goaltending, you know, on a nightly basis and you know, I always say that uh if the goalies give you a chance to win the game then they're doing their job. It doesn't always have to it doesn't have to be uh you know a perfect perfect night all the time, but if they're they're making saves and and giving you an opportunity to be in the game and sometimes you're you know, you're not playing as well as you want, but if there's an opportunity to be in the game, uh, you know, then then the goalies are doing their job.
