You are very welcome along to a special edition, breaking news edition of the Green Scene. I am live here in the Bresson. I'm delighted to say that I'm joined by Matthew Brown and David Wilson, who are back in Ireland. It has been A pretty tumultuous day across all fronts for the Republic of Ireland football team. Uh we didn't know whether we were gonna have a game. We thought maybe for a few moments we weren't gonna have a game tomorrow. And it turns out now we know Ireland will take the field against Israel here in the Bresen tomorrow night. Just to give you maybe a chronological run through of what happened today for those who maybe weren't up to date and on their phones throughout the day. We didn't have the usual pre-match press conference at a quarter past ten this morning.
The Irish team didn't show up. The UEFA delegates couldn't actually find them and had to reach out. And eventually we're told that the Irish team hadn't left the hotel. This persisted for a couple of hours. We were initially told that it'd be pushed back two hours. Then the press corp moved to The Irish Hotel in De Bresse and stood outside for a couple hours awaiting someone to come out and issue a statement while this was happening. We heard news and reports that the players were going to have a vote on whether to go ahead with the game. We heard that a couple of players were not happy with the game going ahead and didn't want to play. We have subsequently found out that Gavin Mazunu will not play. is withdrawn from the squad, he has a statement, and I'll read that out now shortly as well.
Then everyone made their way back to the stadium, the Nadierde Stadium here in the Bresson, where Heyman Hal Grimson was joined by David Carrell and John Martin and they issued a about a thirty minute press conference trying to sum up what has happened today. They faced questions from the Irish media. They face questions from the Israeli media as well. And Hamer Halgramson was kinda left to defend himself from his comments a couple of days ago. And then we saw the Israeli FA step up and give their own press conference where they issued statements about the d their delight with the FAI for going ahead with the game. Just before we kind of get into the nuts and bolts of exactly what happened, there are two statements that have came out this evening.
I'm just gonna read them to you now and maybe we'll go in chronological order with this as well. Um So the Israeli FA was the first one up and they said What pleases us today is that football has won. The separation between football and politics must be maintained, and any other approach spells chaos and a dangerous slide and a slippery slope, leading to disastrous consequences of the game we all love. The Irish Football Association and the national team players did the right thing by recognising this, even if it took took a bit longer than it should. Yes, it's better late than never. The ones who have certainly lost the exhaust today are those who wanted to intimidate, to separate and to turn the football pitch into political arena.
UEFA, the IFA and the FAI stood together strong together to prevent it. As the host association we are proud that the opening whistle will blow tomorrow at eight forty five and may the better team win on the field of play. Flags will be raised, anthems will be played, and the players and coaches of both teams will have the opportunity to shake hands and respect each other. Definitely from our side as always. Now We will get on to what David Corell said in his press conference and he said that there will be no handshakes between each team. He also said that the Irish players, in his own words, will wear black armbands for all those who have lost lives in the conflict.
