I always feel like the best players were able to grab a game by the scruff of the neck when an opportunity kind of presented itself. Great players and great teams were able to kind of seize that moment. Join in the obsession. Subscribe now at offtheball.com forward slash join. So a chance now with less than two minutes to go.
Kempis versus Shelton. No chance.
2-2. Kept his second goal. And Shilton was left without a hope. Mario Kempez, the star of Argentina's first World Cup triumph in 1978, scored a whopping 303 goals over the course of his career, which included spells at Valencia, Rosario Central, River Plate and Instituto. But what if his career had taken a different path and ended up at Spurs? Well, just years after helping his nation win their first World Cup, he nearly joined his fellow countrymen in Ozier Diles and Ricky Villa at the North London Club. But why didn't the deal get over the line? Well, in episode four of Richie McCormack's Sliding Doors, Richie explains why the transfer didn't come to fruition for one of the best strikers in the world of the 70s and 80s.

Alan Reynolds, how did you assess that game tonight?
I thought we fully deserved it. I thought we were really good, could have won another night, could have won by a couple more. Against a good team, a really good side, it's hard to come up here and get a win, but I thought we were excellent, defended really well. I think that's the third clean sheet and Sam Todd, Pat Hickey and so on, the defenders. And then we seen out the game when we needed it the last ten minutes, which is important. I think over the last year or two we could give away a cheap goal at the end so we just defended properly and you know good night all round.
It was a really scrappy first half I was co-commentating with Peter Hutton tonight and we were remarking the fact that neither side could seem to hold on to possession there was a lot of players giving away possession of the ball what did you say to your players at half time?
Yeah, exactly. Let's be cleaner in possession. Let's be better because I felt if you got a couple of passes, you know, the game would open up for you. I think we tweaked things a half time. We dropped the body deeper and had a lot more possession early on and caused them problems with that. But he's right. You know, you're right. The first half was just too scrappy for us. But better second half.
There seems to be a much better, well, actually Peter Hutton remarked on the fact that Bohemians defended the ball or defended your box really well. Maybe set-piece defending last season was a bit of an issue. You seem to have remedied that now, would it be fair to say?
Well, I think we had, you know, our goals conceded was very good last year. So, but yeah, very good. There's a lot of big men in there too, isn't there? You look at Hickey, Todd and Sennan. So, early, they should be dealing with a lot, but... then we should be scoring set pieces with the size they have but you're right yeah we defend the box well and it's something we spoke about just on your actually there was an injury later in the warm-up there for douglas james taylor can you give us any update on him i just had a small knee problem and we had to look him in the warm-up and then he just felt it a bit and we're going you know what there's no point in ruling them out for a few weeks so it's nothing major um should be okay next week but we just didn't want to risk it on the surface yeah
Colin Whelan as well, I suppose a lot of people were thinking he mightn't start tonight, but you seemed happy enough to play him on the surface here tonight.
Yeah, but to be fair, we train on it most days, so he's well used to it, you know, nobody can get on grass, but delighted for Colin, you know, that's all I ask for, give us that effort and work great and I think the goals will come.
