Now coming up today, we kick off the final run into Leinster's Champions Cup decider with Bordeaux this weekend, why Irish coaches are à la mode in French rugby right now, and a pretty distressing court case involving a former Wallabies centre in Australia.
First up today, we're 48 hours out from Leinster's Investec Champions Cup final against Bordeaux in Bilbao. Head coach Leo Cullen will name his team tomorrow for the decider as they try to end eight years of hurt and claim their fifth star. The province have made four Champions Cup finals since their last triumph in 2018. including three of the last four deciders. They've lost twice to Ronan O'Gara's La Rochelle, as well as to Toulouse and Saracen's. And they're sweating over the fitness of Tommy O'Brien and Paddy McCarthy, who are both doubts heading into the weekend. McCarthy has been re-registered for Leinster's Champions Cup squad, as has winger Jordan Larmer. Issa Nasewa was the hero of the tee for Leinster in 2018, taking over the kicking duties for the injured Johnny Sexton in their 15-12 win over Racing 92.
The former Leinster captain joined Adrian Barry on off-the-ball breakfast this morning and explained what took him totally by surprise when he stepped out on the turf at Estadio San Mames that day.
One thing that sort of sticks out, we were all preparing for this blazing 25 degree dry pitch in Spain and it just sounded wonderful and sounded amazing. The fact that rugby hadn't been played there, the whole ethos behind Bilbao as a football club and how they recruit from within the the area and and it's it's a fascinating story that's um added to the occasion we tried not to overthink that obviously but it's pretty cool afterwards when you sort of do some digging and find that out so yeah it's a real amphitheater though um it's hollowed out into the the center of that um area and part of the city so it's yeah it's a pretty cool stadium to be a part of um
And it was so colourful and so loud and everything you'd want from a final. It was, yes, a real special day.
