Look, I suppose I was just out trying to commit it to the ball. I thought he was going to pull on it. Clearly, obviously tripped him. I think he didn't have position on the ball. I think that's what Thomas Wilde said to me. It was the other card, so I don't really know how to rule it down.
I was lucky. I was lucky for it. Join in the obsession. Subscribe now at offtheball.com forward slash join. Off the Balls Rugby Daily with Bank of Ireland, a proud sponsor of Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster Rugby. Never stop competing. You're very welcome along to Thursday's Rugby Daily. I'm Cameron Hill. Now coming up for you today, a much-changed Ireland team for their Nations Championship clash with Eddie Jones' Japan. David Humphries reveals that Ronan O'Gara is a candidate in Leinster's search for a new head coach and how Leinster's partnership with the Rugby League side in Australia has benefited their academy players. First up today, the Ireland team has been named for their second Nations Championship run out this Saturday against Japan in Newcastle.
There are nine changes in total from their last GASP 33-31 win over Australia in Sydney. There's an international debut for Connacht's Sean Jansen. He's added to the back row along with Nick Timoney while Jack Conan retains the six shirt this week. Tyke Byrne captains his country for the very first time. He's in the second row with James Ryan replacing Joe McCarthy who drops out of the side altogether. Tom O'Toole stays at loose head this week. He's joined in the front row by Ronan Kelleher and Thomas Clarkson. It's an all new halfback partnership. Ciarán Frawley earning just a second start at out half this season with Craig Casey for company. Robbie Henshaw partners Stuart McCloskey in the centre this time round, while Jamie Osborne shifts to full-back in place of Hugo Keenan.
That frees up the left wing for Jacob Stockdale to come in, while Jimmy O'Brien, who was a late call-up last weekend when Rob Ballacoon pulled out, you'll remember, he keeps his spot on the right-hand side of the back three. Nathan Doak, Harry Byrne and Bundy Aki cover the backs on the bench, while there are potential debuts for Billy Bowen, Sam Illo and Bryn Ward among the forwards, with Tom Stewart and Cormac Isechukwu rounding out the matchday 23. Speaking earlier today, head coach Andy Farrell remarked on the big milestones for both the new caps and his new skipper.
It's always a special occasion when you give one person a debut, never mind four. Really looking forward to how they apply themselves to attacking the game first and foremost because that's the roles they're able to add to the team and the performance behind all that. But making sure that the rest of the team are there to support them for it to be a special day for them. Huge congratulations to the four of them. It's business time now, they need to rip in. The milestones in Tygburn, captaining his country for the first time is a huge honour for him. He typifies everything that we'd want within a captain of Ireland, how he goes about his job, how he understands what it is that we're after as a team, driving standards, all of that, he typifies that, so he thoroughly deserves that, so congratulations to him.
Captaining your country is a huge honour.
On the Japan front, well, there's just the one change from the team that beat Italy by 27 points to 10 last time out in Tokyo. Taira Main is added to the left wing, while Ryunosuke Ito, who made his debut against the Ituri, keeps his place at out half. Brave Blossoms legend Michael Leach is named on the bench, alongside 21-year-old loosehead Sojiro Otusuka. He's got a really good head on him for a rugby player, head coach Eddie Jones said. He doesn't get too upset about mistakes, gets on with the game and understands when he's got to keep learning. We've got great confidence in the young boy and particularly in the second half, we expect to dominate the Irish scrum. That's unlike Jones to be quite so bullish.
He is of course back in the coaching box after serving a four-match ban imposed by the Japanese RFU for abusing match officials on a tour of Australia earlier this year.
