I'm very happy to be joined by Silvia Turani, who was in the Six Nations team of the tournament last year and is, of course, in the Italy squad in Galway this weekend. Silvia, you're welcome to the show. How are you getting on?
Hello everyone. Thank you very much. Yeah, doing well. Hopefully and likely the sun is out now, so enjoying the sun.
I presume you're looking out on Galway Bay right now?
Yeah, well, not the bay. It's more I'm watching a building construction site from my window here. So I'm not really sure where in the world I am.
Early thoughts on the west of Ireland?
I would say the weather is really, really unstable. That's what surprised me the most. I think we had at least four big raining episodes today and then strong wind and all of that. But the sun is out. Hopefully we stay out.
That turbulent weather is one thing you can be guaranteed of when you go to Galway. Is that something you talk about as a team? Do you actually assess the venue, the weather? Because even compared to Dublin, it's pretty wild out that way.
Yeah, to be fair, like earlier in the season when the recognition sites got announced, I play with IFA at Queens and she mentioned that like you'll be either really lucky when the sun is out is really nice, either really wet because when the rain is out, it's very rainy. So I was kind of aware of that. But apart from that, definitely, yes, the coach kind of loves their like forecast apps. They have like their favorites and then they cross different apps. They do all these kind of things to understand the wind, the conditions and everything.
What is Silvia Turani's rugby journey?
But the reality is that you cannot control the weather 100% and you never really know which half of the pitch you're planning to start with. If you're receiving, you're kicking and all this kind of thing. So end of the day, you have to be prepared for all the different conditions. To be fair, like in Italy, we've been like lucky and unlucky this week because we got even in Rome where our training camp was based, some big, big rain. So we had to train with the condition that we are expecting tomorrow. But hopefully we'll be surprised and we'll be planning in a sun gold way tomorrow.
Fingers crossed. You mentioned there that yourself and Aoife Wafer are teammates at Harlequins at the moment. Any chat between the two of you this week or do you try and keep your distance?
No, we've been good friends. Like, she messaged, I'm really bad at replying to messages, like, in general, not just to her. It's nothing personal. So, she knows she needs patience with me. So, she messaged early in the week, replied today, we are trying to arrange to meet the day after the game. Today, just to be easy for both of us. It would be good to see each other on pitch tomorrow. I've arranged a couple of drinks with Tricky as well. She's injured at the moment. With Clay, she got her 50th last week, usually with them in Exeter. So, yeah, we have
friends in Ireland and I'm looking forward to meet them Tell us how has Aoife settled into the Harlequin squad we're seeing rave reviews of her start to life in English rugby what's it been like playing with her?
Yeah, I think IFA's been great in the environment. As she mentioned quite often, she struggled with injury after the World Cup. So she came in injured and she showed everyone what a professional is about. She's been smashing at rehab and kind of struggling because, as she said many times, you never really feel part of a team unless you play.
