How does Rod Brind'Amour describe the team’s mindset after winning the Stanley Cup?
they're chasing the champs and uh tell otherwise we know who's got the stanley cup that would be
the
carolina hurricanes and we head down to carolina now catch up with their head coach rod brindamore back on overdrive how you doing rod hey guys how are you we're doing well um how you feeling back in camp i mean it was a the shortest summer you could possibly have how's how's everyone doing coming off the stanley cup one
Yeah, I think everybody's pretty good. I mean, camp's camp now, right? Like, it's, you gotta be honest, it's trying to get, you know, I don't want to say trying to get through it, but it's, guys just want to play. Guys just want to drop the puck and start for real, not... You know, they don't like practicing. Nobody does. And I got the same group back. So, you know, it just feels like we just left a little while ago. So it doesn't it's not a lot of teaching. There's not a lot of, you know, when you got a bunch of new guys, you're always worried about how they're figuring things out. We don't really have that. Actually, we don't at all, really. So, yeah. It's just trying to make sure they get up to speed. They only have less time.
So this group, one thing they've done really well over the years is prepare. Their off seasons have been, I think, just really special. How hard they work to get ready to go for the next year. Obviously, with a shortened year or shortened summer, then a little bit less prep time for these guys. So we'll see how it shakes out. But I think we're in good shape.
Why does Brind'Amour think a shortened preseason could be replaced by a week of practice?
Roddy, we were talking about just time it takes for the season to start on time and the hockey to be good around the league right off the bat. What do you think is reasonable? You said the guys don't really even want to play exhibition games. Do you think you could scrap it and have a week of practice and be ready to go for puck drop without them? Yeah, for
sure. Well, I do because... Well, because, like, oh, you remember, I mean, even back 20 years ago, guys, they took it serious all summer, but it's 10 times full now. Like, it is, they're done season, then they got their strength coach, they got personal this, that, nutrition, like, everybody's dialing right in. um and so when they hit they hit the ground running and it's not like even i remember there was always spots available like there was you know 10 guys maybe that you knew were on the team then there was a couple guys that were fighting for a spot here maybe even a goalie spot might have been open maybe a d that doesn't happen now hardly ever like it's the team's pick they got you got 14 guys on one way up front you got another nine on the back end like it's like okay i mean we're
a little bit of an interesting one because we got a guy that's not here so we do have a spot so that's the one I'm interested in to kind of see you know who fits there so it's actually been a little more exciting this camp that I have we have that to kind of you know, figure out. But yeah, so long answer to your question. I think, you know, I'd sooner go to 86 games and zero preseason if that's the way we're going, because it just, I don't know. I think guys are in such good shape now that they really, you know, why waste the games on the fans that don't count? Let's play the ones for real.
That's interesting. I mean, Rod, so basically what you're saying, you're not worried about your crew and the CBA where you weren't allowed to do fitness testing because we saw a few other coaches speak out about their maybe a couple guys in training
camp. Honestly, yeah. Sorry to cut you off there. It's a disservice to the guys. You train all summer. I want to know where I'm at.
What are the challenges of evaluating player conditioning without traditional training‑camp testing?
I want to know what I'm deficient in. So test me. Give me a baseline. You know, now I can work on it. You come in now, cold turkey, nobody knows. Strength coaches don't know what you're good at, what you're not, you know, where you're at, right? I think that's a disservice. And to be honest, I don't, how hard is training camp now? Like, guys, like, come on. Like, we used to do two-a-days. We used to do, you know, you talk about testing.
