Chapter 1: What led to Bruce Cassidy's dismissal as head coach of the Golden Knights?
This hour of Overdrive is powered by FanDuel. FanDuel, bringing you everything from the opening line to the final score.
All right, here we go, Overdrive, off and running, TSN 1050 on the TSN app, your home smart speaker, up on TSN 4, up on YouTube Live, Brian Hayes, your dog Jeff O'Neill, Jamie Noodles McLennan. How are we feeling this afternoon?
What's going on, guys?
What's going on? Beautiful day here.
Beautiful day. The vibe has been set out west. No one get comfortable. Hazy B, I know you're the host and you're the GOAT. Don't get comfortable because no one is safe. Any one of us could get fired at any time. And the Vegas Golden Knights have set the standard. Keep your head on a swivel and perform every night.

Chapter 2: How does John Tortorella's coaching style differ from Cassidy's?
If you feel like it, if you feel like it.
Yep, I hear you. So you're insinuating what I'm Bruce Cassidy and there could be like a John Tortorella type right outside the studio right now.
I'm just saying the grappler is Kelly McCrimmon. Yes, he is. And he could come hunting at any day. The grappler.
The grappler is a lot like Kelly McCrimmon. He is. Both visionaries.
He's cutthroat, visionary. He's a winner. Yeah.
Very smart guys. Ruthless.

Chapter 3: What challenges does the Golden Knights face moving forward this season?
Ruthless. I consider that a compliment, but Kelly's coming up in half an hour. I'm going to ask him that. That's your reputation. You're ruthless. Do you consider that a compliment? Do you take offense to that reputation? They have eight games left, and Bruce Cassidy is out. The guy won a Stanley Cup a couple years ago.
I think Lou fired that stinky Robbie for Torek with one game left or something.
Yes, he did. Yeah, it was very few games left in the season. And Lou did the same thing. And, yeah, I guess McCrimmon said they've lost their soul. So that's the responsibility of the coach, not the goaltending, which is terrible every single night.
Chapter 4: How are the Maple Leafs preparing for their game against the Ducks?
Well, that's what I was going to say, Hayes. Like, goaltenders are just getting people in a whole whack of trouble in this league. They're getting defensemen in trouble. They're getting plus-minuses in trouble. They're getting coaches fired. Their pets' heads are falling off. Goaltenders' noodles. And let me hear your thoughts on this.
They are causing a lot of problems in the National Hockey League. Talk to me, Goose.
I come back to my saying that a general manager said to me, the league should just be called goalie. Because if you have one, you're all right. Ask John Cooper. And if you're Travis Green, it's a little different, right? I mean, it's concerning.
Chapter 5: What impact does goaltending have on a team's success in the NHL?
Or if you're Bruce Cassidy, you're looking at Aiden Hill and didn't make enough saves. And all of a sudden, the crazy part is Vegas could go on a run here. They're a pretty good team on paper. They just haven't played very well.
Yeah. Well, that's it. I mean, obviously they're doing this because they feel like there's something worth trying to salvage. You know, they're, they're barely into playoffs, you know, now LA isn't that good either. And now Nashville starting to lose games and, you know, it's,
It's a lose fest.
Yeah, it is. And McDavid said it. He's like, it's a pillow fight out in the Pacific. And I will say this. Ever since McDavid called himself and his team out, the Oilers are starting to come alive.
Chapter 6: How does the Golden Knights' management handle player accountability?
But, yeah, Vegas is in a position here where they've been around for nine years. They're now in their fourth coach. I find it much more interesting that Tortorella's coming in than Cassidy going out. Like, I understand the initial shock wave of Cassidy being fired. I was not bracing for that. I don't think anyone was.
I guarantee you when you ask Kelly and you say, like, what is the main motivating factor for this, it's simply to get guys' attention. I don't know how they've lost their soul, lost attention to detail, but that's the ultimate coach bump. And it's somewhat shocking. The goaltending is a massive problem. But with that, I've talked about the depth of Vegas and how many good players they have.
For that team with those guys to be declared losing their soul, I quite honestly find to be shocking, Brian. Shocking.
Yeah, I hear you, but this is the thing. Tortorella's coming in.
Chapter 7: What are the expectations for the Golden Knights under Tortorella?
Alex Petrangelo isn't, right? Like, they've lost Petrangelo. They never replaced him. Anderson, they went out and acquired. It's been well documented. He has not found himself or found his game. So I'm with you. On paper, Vegas is a really good team, but... You know, they're an aging team. They're not a young team.
You know, they've been described as a team that wants to pass the puck into the net as opposed to shoot it. You know, there's a lot of playmakers on that team. So management's got to obviously take some of the responsibility for this, and I'm sure Kelly will. But I will give them credit from the standpoint of they have done this since the second they walked into the league.
It doesn't matter what you've done for us in the past.
Chapter 8: How can the Golden Knights improve their performance in the playoffs?
It is simply what you're going to do for us in the future. And the players are aware of that, too. We've talked about it with Marner going there. Mitch is not... I don't know if he retires a Vegas Golden Knight. I don't know if Eichel retires a Golden Knight.
Dude, you see the way they operate.
If you want to turn it into some vacation, like, oh, it's so great to be in Vegas. There's palm trees. Nobody bothers me. That's not their approach. If you don't get the job done, they're going to find a way to move you out. That's how they operate. They just did it with their coach. It's not a place to go on a vacation.
That's the more important pressure, not the goofy, oh, the fans are on Twitter. That's not real pressure. The real pressure is the day-to-day pressure from your coach, your GM, your president, your owner, your teammates. That's living pressure, man. That's when you walk in and you're like, man, John Tortorella is my coach now.
That's pressure. The bottom line is I just mentioned it's not a vacation. They'll fork over the cash, but I've always said it about the guys in Toronto and the whole league in general. They're forking out the cash for one thing. It's the big giant score clock, and it's for wins. It's not so you can go out there and sun yourself around a pool in the backyard and enjoy the lifestyle.
They want to win, and they're cutthroat, and that's all they care about. You could be a great guy, grin screw you on the way in and say, hey, welcome to Vegas, but If you start playing like garbage, you'll find your way out of it.
Yeah, that's right. Honestly, ask Marc-Andre Fleury. Ask Jonathan Marcheseau. Ask Pete DeBoer. Ask Gerard Gallant. Like, I mean, the list goes on. Hayes, you're right. The consistency from day one, it's like, what can you do for us today? Not what you did for us last month, last year, whatever. It's cutthroat.
And I don't know if that's the gold standard or should be in pro sports because you can get yourself into trouble in a different way. But how many general managers have we seen sign a guy because, oh, that guy got us this, so let's give him an eight-year deal, and then it just looks ugly a year in? They're the other way. It's like it doesn't matter what we've given you, what you've done for us.
I'm sorry.
