OverDrive - May 26, 2026 - Hour 2 - Keegan Matheson/Mike Johnson

Chapter 1: What updates do we have on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s injury status?

0.166 - 18.779 Bryan Hayes

Our two overdrive continues, powered by FanDuel, Brian Hayes, Theo Dogg, Jeff O'Neill, Jamie Noodles, McLennan. Game four of the Western Final and Stanley Cup playoffs tonight. Game five of the Western Final and the NBA playoffs tonight. We got the Memorial Cup continuing in beautiful Kelowna, British Columbia.

0

18.8 - 22.967 Jeff O'Neill

Is the weather good out there, I think? Oh, is it sunny and stuff?

0

24.297 - 47.571 Unknown

You know what? The mornings are a little cool. They're perfect. And then it turns like the sauna gets cranked up in the afternoon. It's incredible. Today it stayed cool the whole day like it was perfect golfing weather. And, Hayes, I know you hate shout-outs, but I talked about that Okanagan Golf Club. The views and the trees and stuff, I'm telling you, it's very...

0

47.551 - 57.45 Unknown

It's a beautiful place to play golf. You just get to a vista and you see... It's awesome. Although Frankie played terrible and it was tough to watch. Beautiful place.

0

57.67 - 59.814 Bryan Hayes

That is disappointing that Frankie would be that bad.

60.014 - 61.617 Jeff O'Neill

Frankie shot a... What did he shoot?

61.638 - 65.104 Bryan Hayes

95? Yeah, something like that. 97. 97!

65.084 - 78.787 Unknown

And he's a good golfer, isn't he? Well, allegedly. He is. He got side. This thing was tree-lined, and this guy was in a pencil factory all morning, and it was Plinko in there.

79.748 - 83.154 Bryan Hayes

You get off the path with trees, man. You're in big, big trouble.

Chapter 2: How is Alejandro Kirk's recovery progressing for the Blue Jays?

415.165 - 434.464 Keegan Matheson

Yes, Addison Barger coming back, and others will help, but Kirk, man, I cannot overstate his importance to this team. I always say that for people at home, however important you think Alejandro Kirk is, double it and triple it. I promise you it's that much to this team, and man, they have missed him. It's been a long, old time from that broken thumb, but they need him back.

0

434.444 - 451.564 Bryan Hayes

Well, there's been so much turnover, you know, to the daily lineup compared to where it was in September and October of last year. And a lot of that is injuries, clearly, with Kirk out and with Barger out. But some of it is based on play. You know, David Schneider was sent down to the minors with Nathan Lucas returning.

0

451.644 - 476.331 Bryan Hayes

And I'm curious, you know, once Kirk returns, what does that mean for Heinemann? Once Barger returns, what does it mean for, you know, is it Penango? Is it... Sanchez, some of these newer guys who were not on the radar in the spring, let alone this time last year, what do you think happens with these positioning battles, let's say a month from now, presuming everyone's back and healthy?

0

478.538 - 497.088 Keegan Matheson

Yeah, guys, that's when the Blue Jays are in a good place, when they can start letting performance drive this. Performance has not been driving this in a lot of situations, and that's just by necessity. You need healthy bodies. You need guys who can play the infield, which is probably why Lenin Sosa is still on this roster, despite the fact he took a walk yesterday, guys, for the first time.

0

497.108 - 519.354 Keegan Matheson

113 plate appearances, I think, this season. Lenin Sosa finally took a walk, but it's been ugly. And if David Schneider was playing like he did last year with a 797 OPS, a guy who fit this team perfectly, then that would be so much better. If Kirk were back, if Barger were back. I think that when Kirk is back right now, it's Brandon Valenzuela's job. I think he fully and completely deserves that.

519.574 - 535.713 Keegan Matheson

And I think he's a big leaguer for the next five years with Alejandro Kirk. That's one hell of a catching tandem. That's a really good tandem in Major League Baseball. But then you get into the decisions about does Joendrik Pignango, does he stick around? Last night did not help. Wandering around in left field did not help whatsoever.

536.214 - 554.34 Keegan Matheson

So you start to get into conversations where the best man wins. That's what this was supposed to be all along. But when you have so many injuries, things like having options or your position come into it. All of these factors that are not just who's the best ball player. The Blue Jays have not had that option enough, but I think that's coming.

554.701 - 565.178 Keegan Matheson

And that can kind of get to what O-Dog mentioned earlier, that point where it starts to turn. The Jays just haven't been able to capture that identity yet because this is not who they thought would be here.

565.816 - 583.501 Bryan Hayes

What about the rotation with Corbin pitching very well? I mean, I said yesterday he's kind of in this year's Eric Lauer. You know, when Beaver, I guess, had a pretty good stint in the minors, he's going to continue to rehab. I don't think he's like right around the corner from returning, but he will at some point. And when he does, he's going to pitch.

Chapter 3: What roster changes are impacting the Blue Jays this season?

1341.905 - 1355.795 Bryan Hayes

We love you. I understand what you're saying, the symbolism of it all. But if it's so important, if Austin's got all these questions... Fly up, man. You know where the Leafs' front office is. Come up and have a chat if you want.

0

1355.815 - 1364.919 Jeff O'Neill

But the one thing that we can point out, Vegas, the way that they've established... how they're going to conduct business for 10 years. That's how they do it.

0

1365.54 - 1367.582 Bryan Hayes

And that's the way every team in the league should do it.

0

1367.602 - 1386.959 Jeff O'Neill

Okay, but it hasn't happened like that. Maybe John Chayka and maybe Matt Sundin goes, this is how we're going to do it. We're not flying to you. Give us a call. I'm fine with that. We'll get on and we'll move on because we're busy, you're busy, and we'll talk to you. We're going to let you know what we're going to do. If you're in, if you've told us you're in, exactly what you said.

0

1387.159 - 1387.76 Keegan Matheson

We'll let you know.

1387.78 - 1389.081 Jeff O'Neill

We're going to make some moves.

Chapter 4: What insights does Keegan Matheson provide on the Blue Jays' performance?

1389.481 - 1416.263 Jeff O'Neill

I think that could be, the conversation that they've had. But again, this is a bigger conversation. Oh, I was thinking about this last night. Look at the four teams that are left in the conference finals here. You pretty much can tell exactly everything about the culture in those four organizations. Montreal, we've talked. Very likable. Gordon down to Suzuki. All of that.

0

1416.964 - 1436.418 Jeff O'Neill

We know what Vegas is all about. Just win, win, win. Colorado, it's McKinnon. You can see the line. And in Carolina, Rod Brindamore. Linear. I would ask you, what is some of these organizations that we talk about in daily life, what is defined by them? That's the difference.

0

1436.438 - 1443.389 Bryan Hayes

Well, that's it. The Leafs have, they got an owner, they got a board, and then they got a president and CEO, and then there's two different kind of co-GMs.

0

1443.409 - 1453.444 Jeff O'Neill

We'll see what they build here. Yeah, it's different. You'll see what they build here with Matt into John Chayka, into a new culture. That's what something, but...

0

1453.424 - 1474.129 Bryan Hayes

And Matthews has got to be the driving force in all that. Agreed. And, you know, if he's going to be here and going to be the captain, then that doesn't change. You know, like he's got to be a leader. He's got to run the operation. And that's on him to do that. Right. You know, like he's the captain. They've anointed him the captain.

1474.189 - 1493.845 Bryan Hayes

I just don't see this as like some – like they have treated him with the utmost of respect for a decade. Right. The Leafs have treated him so well, and I'm not a believer that because it's a Zoom call instead of a flight, all of a sudden they're turning their back on this guy. I think that's outrageous. Go ahead.

1493.865 - 1508.033 Unknown

I'm really glad you brought up that Vegas comparison because Vegas, this is how they would have handled it. Call Jack on the phone and say, is there a problem? Because if there is, we'll move you immediately and we'll get somebody else in here. Honestly, that would be their approach.

1508.073 - 1515.207 Unknown

We love you as a player, but if you're going to be pissing and moaning and you're complaining about something, we'll find a different centerman. That's how they would do it.

1515.187 - 1531.767 Bryan Hayes

That's what I'm saying. You know, like you mentioned the teams that are playing right now. You think Tulsky's like, oh, you know, Mark Stahl up in Thunder Bay. He's not happy. I better get on a bird up there. No. Like, that's just... It's 2026. You have the technology. If we got to hash something out, we can hash it out.

Chapter 5: What is the significance of Auston Matthews' recent discussions with the Leafs' management?

2695.775 - 2698.546 Bryan Hayes

At least three new defensemen on the team next year.

0

2699.51 - 2701.317 Jeff O'Neill

Huck moving defensemen.

0

2701.972 - 2724.88 Bryan Hayes

Mobile puck-moving defenseman. Yes. Like, you look at a guy like that Gostin spare last night. He's flying around, you know, moving pucks around. Scrap heap find. Yes. Yeah, absolutely. He's kicked around, right? And Carolina didn't just say, we'll take you. They're playing him. Like, Brindamore plays him a lot. So, three new defensemen.

0

2725.12 - 2729.145 Bryan Hayes

I think this McKenna kid, I'm guessing you go first overall, and he's going to step in and play.

0

Chapter 6: How does the Maple Leafs' coaching search impact team dynamics?

2730.066 - 2748.028 Bryan Hayes

Yep. And... I'm going to pick the two best goalies. It doesn't matter who's on term. So maybe Stolarz is going to go. Maybe Joseph Wall is going to go. But I'm going to give you the best two options I can in net of what we have. They have four options right now. They've got to pick the two best.

0

2748.588 - 2757.18 Jeff O'Neill

Stable goaltending, puck moving D, and I think you need to... McKenna's going to step in, and then more than that. Yeah, you're going to need more than that.

0

2757.26 - 2778.096 Bryan Hayes

So a lot, but those are the ingredients. Those are the ingredients. Seems simple. They'll figure it out. All right, good stuff. Thanks to everyone behind the scenes for helping out. We appreciate it.
