Chapter 1: What is the significance of the Monaco Grand Prix in F1?

5.667 - 24.485 Matt

Hello everybody and welcome back to the P1 Podcast with Matt and Tommy. Race week once again and I think we can now officially say it's momentum time. We are very much in the slipstream of this season now and we've got races on races and I cannot wait for it.

0

24.926 - 43.052 Matt

Of course, as you can see right now, we are in our setups because we're of course pre-recording this and to be fair, this is going out before we will fly over because Because we're going to Monaco. We're going to the Monaco Grand Prix. It sounds like we could be up to some very exciting things. So make sure you're following us on Instagram and things like that.

0

43.112 - 48.622 Matt

Because this is going to be an epic trip. One that I cannot wait for, Tommy.

Chapter 2: How do Matt and Tommy feel about the upcoming Monaco race?

48.903 - 67.382 Matt

And look, if there's a race to go to... Monaco is usually the one because it's obviously very special and it's awesome to go there. We've been there, haven't you been there once for the race? Like actually, that was a few years ago. So it's not like we've been there that many times, but also we can kind of guarantee we're not going to get

0

67.362 - 93.741 Tommy

a thousand side-by-side incredible overtakes you don't know the new regs you never know um but but it's true it as one to go to the the criticism of you know it's amazing to go it's always exciting but but not knowing kind of every little detail of going on is quite difficult when you're at the race uh whereas monaco when there's two overtakes a race um hopefully not an early safety car and a red flag that that just well it depends yeah i was gonna say let's

0

93.721 - 101.905 Tommy

Charles Leclerc is on pole position. In which case, don't flake me up. But yeah, I'm super excited for it. Excited for this race in general.

0

Chapter 3: What recent news in F1 is worth discussing before predictions?

102.486 - 106.819 Tommy

Very interested to see what the new cars can deliver around this track.

0

107.069 - 127.17 Matt

Me too. And whether or not it will shake up any kind of pecking order, because it's a very, very different track, as we all know. Now, before we get into our predictions, let's have a little waffle about the things that have been going on in the world of Formula One. Not a huge amount of things, but some things definitely to sort of cover. One of which is that Gucci.

0

127.15 - 149.231 Matt

Gucci is joining the grid, not as an actual, you know, they're not the race team, but they are the title sponsor of Alpine next year. So you best believe Matt and Tommy come out the woodwork next year as massive Alpine fans. Grace is going to be dripped head to toe in Gucci because she's always been an Alpine fan from day one. Might not be anymore. Sure, maybe. Well, why?

0

149.471 - 150.812 Matt

Wait, why is she not an Alpine fan?

0

150.832 - 151.953 Tommy

BWT, there'll be no pink anymore.

151.993 - 154.576 Matt

She won't be interested. That's true, actually.

154.776 - 155.757 Tommy

Yeah, gutted.

155.737 - 165.208 Matt

Yeah, I've seen some mock liveries of what that car could look like, and I mean, it looks pretty saucy, but I like gold-trimmed anything, so sign me up.

165.228 - 182.368 Tommy

It's going to be either epic or hideous, I think, personally. I think it could be a mix between the two, but yeah, we might see a return to kind of black and gold, like we saw kind of in Team Enstone back when they were Lotus back in the day.

Chapter 4: What are the predictions for the Monaco GP qualifying results?

182.348 - 209.689 Tommy

um but yeah it's it's gonna it's an exciting partnership obviously massive for formula one they're shouting about it i may be in the minority that i'll i'll miss the bwt pink because i like the lp to think it looks really cool and really stands out but it's a cool thing for formula one and it is one of those things where when we get to car launches next season it's probably going to be the most anticipated one because you know it's going to be a new livery

0

209.669 - 215.659 Matt

Oh, for sure. For sure. So excited to see what that will look like. But I agree. Yeah, the pink is pretty iconic.

0

215.86 - 217.342 Tommy

Maybe BWT goes somewhere else.

0

218.544 - 242.798 Matt

Ferrari. Pink and red. What a livery that would be. Anything but HP. So over to another bit of news, which is, of course, Bottas. Now, this was a rather large rumour circulating around him being replaced. But, Tommy, it seems as though, similar to Ocon in Canada, that this has also been dismissed.

0

243.301 - 261.428 Tommy

Yeah, obviously, when there's not too much news going on, there always seems to be some kind of rumor going around. And Bottas, let's not kind of beat around the bush, he has been pretty poor, to say the least, in the last couple of races. Had a pair in the championship, just saying. I know. I'll never live that one down.

261.408 - 285.34 Tommy

finishes every single race behind him apart from the one that matters um but yeah he's been he's been very poor and there was rumors that oh he could be out after monaco which i think is insane it took it with a pinch of salt anyway before cadillac themselves dismissed it and said it's not true particularly because they were talking about colton herter replacing him who doesn't even have enough super license points yet

Chapter 5: Who do Matt and Tommy predict will be the top drivers in the race?

285.32 - 309.37 Tommy

So it literally can't happen anyway. So he needs to do more to be able to get that seat. And, you know, if Bottas' kind of performances are the same throughout the rest of the year, yeah, they might replace him at the end of the year. But I could see him lasting the year still, a bit like Ocon. It's almost like exactly the same conversation as Ocon.

0

309.518 - 326.059 Matt

Yeah, it's so true. I just don't really know where these rumours came from, or I didn't believe them the second I heard them, to be honest with you, because Cadillac are all about literally just building a foundation of a team, and that's why they went for Bottas and Perez. Yes, Bottas has been pretty...

0

326.039 - 337.914 Matt

poor this year so far, but at the same time, they're not necessarily getting him to try and score points at this stage of their sort of team. They want 13ths. No, they want 13ths. They want his knowledge, Tommy.

0

337.975 - 338.695 Tommy

No, it's true.

0

338.716 - 355.763 Matt

He's got Mercedes and that sort of stuff. So, you know, Cadillac aren't fighting for points, but I agree that, you know, if he gets... you know, completely whooped by Perez the entire year, then perhaps they will look somewhere else. But is Colton Herter the place that they'd want to go? Because surely that would have its own question marks as well.

355.903 - 361.834 Matt

So, yeah, I don't think he will be replaced at all this year, but let's see. And finally...

Chapter 6: What factors could impact the performance of Ferrari at Monaco?

361.814 - 386.198 Matt

There is no straight mode at Monaco. Not one. Not a single one. We're not going to see the old rear and front wings moving. I don't know, I was going to say old DRS and I didn't say it and then it makes absolutely no sense. Of course, you know, the straight mode, what looks like DRS from last year, there's going to be no straight mode around Monaco. So it's full, just drag. Full drag.

0

386.938 - 410.181 Tommy

It's the opposite of full send. Yeah, true, actually. But the straights are so short that they shouldn't, in theory, superclip. Part of that was because it had to reduce the drag, so otherwise the superclipping would be insane and they'd be losing so much power on the straight and they'd be a lot slower. That's why this was kind of introduced anyway, the active aero.

0

410.161 - 434.019 Tommy

But it's not needed at Monaco, and I think this is absolutely the right choice. Definitely the right choice. It's not needed. It will help with slipstream. I think if the cars are slower, that's better for Monaco. We've said many times on this podcast when we talk about Monaco and ways to improve it, Formula E has really good races there because it's not as fast.

0

Chapter 7: How do the hosts view Mercedes' chances at the Monaco GP?

434.9 - 452.622 Tommy

And always with slower cars, you get that kind of exciting racing. And Monaco has been outgrown because the cars are so insanely quick now. Whereas I think this should help. I mean, it's not going to be a million overtakes, is it? But it's something.

0

452.602 - 473.706 Matt

Yeah, they don't need to use it for the reason that we've had it so far this year, as you say. They need every bit of help down a lot of the straights this year, whereas with Monaco, there's plenty of places to recharge. And I'm interested to see whether we do get the qualifying of old on the Saturday and we're not seeing any kind of lifting or any kind of super clipping. That would be lovely.

0

473.766 - 477.63 Matt

So we get that same exciting feel of a Saturday around Monaco.

0

477.982 - 483.869 Tommy

Yeah, the drivers seem to think that will be the case, and I certainly hope so because that is the best bit of Monaco.

0

484.75 - 503.972 Tommy

Maybe controversially in an alternate reality because I think it's better for it now, but I'd have loved to have seen the rules that we had at the start of the year for the Monaco Grand Prix because the difference between speeds are so much that I think it would be fascinating to watch

503.952 - 512.403 Tommy

and see how that panned out with basically such a big advantage of a boost behind someone that whether you could get past. I would actually want to see that.

512.463 - 529.765 Matt

I don't know about that one, Michael. Someone's ending up in the harbour if we had the same difference in speed. I think that is asking for trouble if we had those big, like we saw in Japan, for example, with Oli and Franco. I'm not sure that that would have been the way to go.

529.785 - 533.711 Tommy

I would like to have seen it personally. Not someone in the harbour, obviously.

Chapter 8: What are the final predictions and thoughts before the Monaco GP?

533.971 - 536.496 Tommy

Yeah, thank you for clarifying. Just for clarification.

0

536.576 - 558.936 Matt

Yeah, just in case anybody thought that Tommy is a horrible human being. Yeah. Okay, well, that's not the case, so we won't know, but I'm still very fascinated to see how the cars go around here. Now, let's get into the predictions. It's 2016 to Tommy. I've made some progress, although the George Russell good surprise was not given, clearly.

0

559.898 - 564.486 Tommy

It wasn't. It was not even close. I saw a lot of people coming. The top comment was like, Matt, I'm just trying to...

0

564.466 - 566.609 Matt

But did we do a vote like you said we would do?

0

566.629 - 567.55 Tommy

Yeah, yeah. You did?

567.63 - 587.674 Matt

What was the vote result? 78% said that he should be a good surprise. So 22, but that's a lot of people. Thank you guys for those of you that came to my help. But yes, okay. I mean, fair enough. I understand considering what we have given for good surprise in the past and not given. 2016 to Tommy. I've still made good progress. I can see him waking in his boots.

588.275 - 613.052 Tommy

It's your turn to go first. So my good surprise, I've gone for Esteban Ocon. Ocon, of course, very good around here. Esty besty. Last time we went to Monaco, he nearly got pole position. He was absolutely unbelievable in that Alpine, finished the race third. Challenging for pole, actually. It was incredible to watch. He's very good around here, of course. How far off was he?

613.032 - 634.979 Tommy

It wasn't that far off from what I remember. I'm sure he was... Let me have a look. Because it was the year where it was Verstappen and Alonso fighting. Yes. And Max did that amazing final sector. And Ocon was... It was the first run, so he was a lot closer. He was actually a couple of tenths off.

634.999 - 636.541 Matt

Tommy's chatting rubbish, everybody.
