This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed human. 2%. That's the number of people who take the stairs when there is also an escalator available. I'm Michael Easter. And on my podcast, 2%, I break down the science of mental toughness, fitness, and building resilience in our strange modern world.
Put yourself through some hardships, and you will come out on the other side a happier, more fulfilled, healthier person. Listen to 2%, that's T-W-O percent, on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
On the Look Back At It podcast. 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.

In 2023, Bachelor star Clayton Eckerd was accused of fathering twins, but the pregnancy appeared to be a hoax. You doctored this particular test twice, Ms. Owens, correct? I doctored the test once.
It took an army of internet detectives to uncover a disturbing pattern. Two more men who'd been through the same thing.
Greg Gillespie and Michael Mancini.

Chapter 2: How did Charlotte's conversation with John Cena change her mindset?
Hi, guys.
Thank you for joining us.
Thank you. I'm so happy to see you, especially on this megastar weekend. The biggest weekend of the year. Saw you at War Games. Yes. Saw you at War Games. Then cheering you on.
Dancing with the stars.
You came to cheer me on.
Dancing with the stars.
Killing it. Just so sweet. Wicked night. Uh-huh. My favorite dance. My favorite dance of the whole show. So this is your eighth WrestleMania. A staggering accomplishment. But you missed out on the last two years because of injury. So does this one feel extra special to you? Wait, let me think. Three, two, three, three. I think it's my ninth. Is this ninth? I think it's my ninth. Man.
It's my ninth. Wow. Um, does it feel more special? I don't think given the injury that it feels more special. I think being with Lexi is what makes it feel so special because being a solo act for so long and dealing with the pressure and the The storylines during the week and the media, it's all just... Prior, it was just...
Talking about myself, talking about myself, talking about myself or like what's going into the title match. And this year it's like, I'm sharing it with Lexi. We're doing signings together, talking about our friend. It just feels different.

Chapter 3: What does Charlotte share about her experience at WrestleMania?
But it was just like, man, that's not what I do best. What I do best is wrestle. But then I think it just made coming back that much better though, just because it's like, wow, this can be taken away from you any second. So like to enjoy it more. Yeah. Or like when you're complaining like, man, my schedule is so busy. Yeah. It's like, wait, hold on. Right.
Like these were like, be grateful that you're tired. Be grateful that you're so busy. Be grateful that it's like, Hey, I'm only getting four and a half hours of sleep and like reminding yourself that. Right. Cause the alternative is be sitting at home. Wishing you were four and a half hours of sleep. Yeah.
is this uh so we i'm i'm just new to this world danielle has introduced me to this world over the last say year or so so i understand this is essentially super bowl weekend yes um that being said is it different i mean because i imagine physically going into the ring is always a really challenging thing and it's got to just be tough on your body every single time but is there a different vibe to wrestlemania than there is all the other kind of events that you have to do
I can only speak for me. I'm so competitive that I treat everything like WrestleMania. Right, okay. Whether it's TV, I'm always going to try to look my best. I feel like I stay ready 24-7. So if WrestleMania was again in three weeks, I'd be WrestleMania ready. Ready to go, okay. So I really think it's...
depending on who you are, it's how much effort you put in, how much, it's like, get ready to be ready. Well, and I feel like in this business, the ones who stay ready are the ones that, you know, take it to the next level.
So like a samurai, you're just always ready to battle.
Yes. That's cool. You obviously grew up in the business. Your father, the legendary nature boy, Ric Flair. So I can assume your childhood was a bit of a circus.
Yes.
We always hear stories about Stephanie McMahon's friendships with Andre the Giant and others. I wanted to hear who your pals were over at WCW when you were tagging along with your dad at work. So I have told this story a few times, and I think it was like the only thing they took from the interviews because it was so shocking. But Macho Man came to see me at school. Yeah.

Chapter 4: How does Charlotte manage the pressures of being a WWE superstar?
The kids like that. That makes me cool. My brothers want to be wrestlers. I didn't know. Stacey Keebler dated my brother when I was in middle school. And I remember when he brought Stacey Keebler to our house. My older brother did. Not my brother that passed. And I was like, wow.
Wow.
She is the most beautiful woman in the world. And just being like, oh my God, David, Stacy, wake up so I could play with her. So that's how I viewed wrestling. Right.
Oh, that's cool.
Yeah. That's so great. As a kid, did you like it more when your dad was a baby face or a heel? I didn't know the difference. Like he could have been like the worst guy ever. And like, I'd be sitting in front of him like, that's my dad. When people are booing your dad, I feel like I'd want to fight everybody who's booing my dad.
But see, that makes me think he was always a good guy because people like, no one ever, I would have remembered the booing. But I also know like, because he was older when he had Reed and I, we probably was like later on in his career. Like maybe when he like NWA days, I didn't see the booing or the booing.
2%. That is the number of people who take the stairs when there is also an escalator available. I'm Michael Easter, and on my podcast, 2%, I break down the science of mental toughness, fitness, and building resilience in our strange modern world.
I'll be speaking with writers, researchers, and other health and fitness experts and more to look past the impractical and way too complex pseudoscience that dominates the wellness industry. We really believe that seed oils were inherently inflammatory. We got it wrong.
Many of the problems that we are freaked out about in the world are the result of stress.

Chapter 5: What insights does Charlotte provide about teamwork in wrestling?
I doctored the test once.
It took an army of internet detectives to crack the case. I wanted people to be able to see what their tax dollars were being used for. Sunlight's the greatest disinfectant. they would uncover a disturbing pattern. Two more men who'd been through the same thing.
Greg Gillespie and Michael Marangini.
My mind was blown. I'm Stephanie Young. This is Love Trap.
Laura, Scottsdale Police.
As the season continues, Laura Owens finally faces consequences.
Ladies and gentlemen, breaking news out of Maricopa County as Laura Owens has been indicted on fraud charges.
This isn't over until justice is served in Arizona. Listen to Love Trapped Podcast on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
There's two golden rules that any man should live by. Rule one, never mess with a country girl. You play stupid games, you get stupid prizes. And rule two, never mess with her friends either. We always say that. Trust your girlfriends. I'm Anna Sinfield. And in this new season of The Girlfriends.

Chapter 6: How does Charlotte balance her personal life and wrestling career?
Like I am not Teflon. Right. And I think I'm just so great. Like I'm grateful that I did. Yeah. So I was like, Oh, I don't know. No.
Well, no, we keep hearing that. I mean, over and over again, it's just the idea where it's like, I'm still a person underneath the character I'm playing or the lifestyle and living, whatever it is, I'm still real. And so the idea that you just think it's okay to say whatever you want, whenever you want is not okay.
But at the same time, what was hard for me is like, yeah, I'm playing a character. So it's okay to be that character. Yeah. But then it kind of got to a point where it's like, No, they're hating me. They're not hating the kid. In my mind, I was like, well, that's how good you are at your job.
You have stayed so true to Charlotte and the consistency of what it takes to be on top and to be that good of a bad guy. They're actually hating you thinking that that is you.
But I was like, okay, this is, I felt at some point where I was like, well, if there's like future sponsorships or like we had just gone to Netflix or like these people are watching this and then like the headlines are like, she's this, she's that. And I'm like, well, we're not attacking the character anymore. We're attacking Ashley. And like, no one's coming to the rescue, which no one should.
But I'm like, hey, I don't want my future employers thinking that like, They don't know the difference between Ashley and Charlotte. And that's kind of how I felt like up against the wall. That is one of the very rare things about wrestling. Unlike most people are very clear on the idea that the actor is not the character.
No one's coming up to our was going up to Alan Rickman on the, on the street going, I hate you because the character you played in diehard.
But because the bleeding over of personal life and character in wrestling is so unique. When I'm on Dancing with the Stars, nobody's coming up to me yelling at me about my divorce from 2015. Right. Whereas in the wrestling world- It's so strange.
It seems unique to the wrestling world.

Chapter 7: What advice does Charlotte give to aspiring wrestlers?
Yeah. Oh, that's good. Yeah. That's great. It's only gotten like better every, yeah. That's great. And have you been better in this last year at taking care of Ashley? Yes. Yes. Good. That makes me happy. I see the joy on your face. Yes. So that makes me happy. It's been fun. I remember one thing I really took away from the article, which is an article I think about a lot.
It comes up in my mind often, just so you know. I hope we can all admit that it is very difficult to be a woman. I mean. Heck yes. Yes.
You said it like I have to admit it too. I don't know. You have to admit that it is. But I have no idea.
Yes. I mean, it's just there's we deal with a lot all at the same time. So speaking of women doing badass things this year, Stephanie McMahon is being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. And I wanted to hear from you what Stephanie has meant to you over the years and also what part you think she has played in bringing women's wrestling to where it is today.
So in terms of what she means to the industry and talking about bad guys, when she was playing the bad guy role, I don't think there was anyone better than her. Like she played that role to the T. And she also gave women the platform in our industry to know that you could have another role that just wasn't, In ring wrestling.
Yeah.
Like she was that prominent of a figure and could talk on the mic, which I think that's really hard to do. Yeah. To captivate an audience with just being able to speak. But that's how big of a presence that she had. Like when Stephanie walks in the room, you're like, yeah, that's Stephanie McMahon. She has that like aura to her. Yeah.
Um, but in terms of what she has been able to do for the women, I don't know if she hadn't had been hands-on in 2015 after, um, the hashtag give divas a chance trended for three days during the MLB series and her team in the office focusing on, okay, we're what can we do with the women to get them opportunities and to show that if you invest in women, they do sell. Right.
So whether that was merchandise, whether that was, I was the first wrestler plus female. Um, well, yeah, only wrestler to be in the body issue for ESPN, um, Um, there was, uh, Sasha and Lexi's match in Abu Dhabi. So many things were happening for the girls at that time. And I don't know, had she not been in office, had that push not happened for us.

Chapter 8: What are Charlotte's goals as she enters her 40s?
Many of the problems that we are freaked out about in the world are the result of stress. Listen to 2%, that's T-W-O percent, on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Lil' Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people?
I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Lil' Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back At It podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have eggs on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to Look Back at It on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
In 2023, former Bachelor star Clayton Eckerd found himself at the center of a paternity scandal.
The family court hearings that followed revealed glaring inconsistencies in her story. This began a years-long court battle to prove the truth.
