There's new headlines every day, but Ecclesiastes says it's not the new one in the sun. So thanks for being here to get the true story. And at the end of this show today, I want to make sure that we understand there's miracles around us all the time. That is the story of the day, a modern day miracle. What happened? Do you remember hearing about an American who was shot down in his airplane over Iran and somehow was able to be rescued? Do you remember this? I remember something about behind enemy lines and he had to get to the top of a mountain ridge and then get rescued.
That was all the details when this happened months ago. We didn't know anything more. Now we do. Here's the story. Our planes were over Iran to strike some industrial facility related to their drone program, drone and missile program. There was nuclear stuff in this area of Iran, which, by the way, is the size of Alaska and very mountainous and rugged through most of it. So somewhere deep in Iran, they did have nuclear stuff there, but we were going after this other industrial stuff. This plane is an F-15E. It was flying to the target, and it was hit by a shoulder-fired rocket. Hit the plane. How did the Iranian hit it? It's crazy. But he got the shot. Plane blows up. Two Americans inside the plane. We now know who one of those Americans are.
He said the day started like any other in this war. You know, any other day when you're flying in a war in F-15. But he said when he got hit, he said it felt like getting hit by a freight train. Now, before I keep going with the story, here's what's crazy about this guy. What do you think he looks like? A dad. I don't know the best way I can describe what this guy looks like. He looks like he's most happiness and peace when he is wearing khaki pants mowing the lawn. That's the best I can describe this guy. This is the kind of guy, oh, love this guy. But you're walking down the sidewalk and he stops the mower to say hello. Oh, hot one out here now. Oh, man, it's hot. Man, hard work out here. And he'll say, mow money, mow problems. This guy is most comfortable mowing the lawn in khaki pants making dad jokes. Or flying jets over Iran. Probably telling dad jokes, too. I don't know any... F-15 fighter pilot dad jokes, but I'm sure there are many. He knows them all. Plane gets hit. They eject. Two Americans. One of the guys, his parachute works.
He floats down to the earth. This guy, his parachute is damaged in the explosion. It's burned up. I don't know exactly. It's flying in the air. Parachute doesn't deploy. Now he's in freefall. While in freefall, he says the Lord's Prayer. He prays to God while he is falling to the ground and trying to fix his parachute best he can. He hits the ground and lives there. 60 Minutes aired this interview, and they cut to some B-roll at this moment when he was telling this part of the story. And in the B-roll, it says something like, you know, these fighter pilots, they train to land rough landings over the parachute, and it shows them three cinder blocks high. So, like, if you're watching on the TV or YouTube, like, this high off the ground, and they fall into a sandbox and, like, fall to the ground.
I don't know, what's three cinder blocks high? Two and a half feet? Something like that? That's not... You don't prepare for this. That's very different than what this guy survived.
