How did Emily Gavin decide to transition from clinical OT to a dementia‑focused private practice?

Jena Castro-Casbon 0:00
Starting a private practice isn't what it used to be. Today's clinicians are starting private practices much quicker, easier, and cheaper than before. And they aren't guessing their way through it or getting stuck in analysis paralysis, they're following a tried-and-trude roadmap in order to save time, money, and frustration. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel or struggle to figure out how to start a private practice on your own. We've helped thousands of SLPs and OTs through this process and now we want to help you too. For a limited time, I'm offering a free copy of our private practice roadmap, specifically for SLPs and OTs who are curious about private practice and want to see what the journey looks like.

Emily Gavin is an occupational therapist and dementia care coach with a private practice called Philly Care Coaching in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She decided to take the leap into private practice with encouragement from her peers and her spouse after being laid off from her job. I've gotten to know Emily during her time in both the Start and Grow Your Private Practice programs. And it has been so cool to watch her grow her specialty-based private practice of working with people with dementia and their families and have that bloom into a successful private practice. In this episode, she talks about her journey from working in the SNFs and inpatient rehab to owning her own business.
Jena Castro-Casbon 1:34
Emily also shares how caring for her mother-in-law with dementia inspired her special interest. If you've been thinking about starting a coaching-based private practice and want to learn more, this is a must-listen episode, so stay tuned. I'm Jenna Castro-Kazvan, CEO of the Independent Clinician and founder of Private Practice School. First, I started my own private practice. And then over the past 15 years, I've worked with over 10,000 SLPs and OTs to start and grow their successful private practices so they can have more freedom, flexibility, fulfillment, and finances. I created the Private Practice Success Stories podcast. to share what's possible for you, your family, your clients, and your community when you choose private practice.

We'll share everything from small private practice side hustles to flexible lifestyle private practices to traditional brick and mortar practices and everything in between. You'll meet regular clinicians, just like you, who followed our steps and are now living their private

And then share also when did you start thinking about private practice?
Emily Gavin 3:25
So this is my second career, occupational therapy. I had a 17-year career in IT. And in um two thousand nine, a dear friend of mine died of brain cancer. And it was one of those life is short moments. And I really wanted a career that played to my strengths, that was more aligned with who I am. And brought me into relationship with people and not just screams.
Jena Castro-Casbon 4:01
Yes. I don't obviously love that happened, right? But I I love that it got you to a place where you had that moment that recentered you, it sounds like, and got you like re kind of back on track about making sure that you were doing what you were meant to do in life.
