She was working for another private practice, fulfilling school contracts as a contractor, and then decided to start her own private practice where she does school contracts and hires contractors to fulfill the work. She was initially nervous to start a business early in her career, but decided that it was now or never and went for it. All right, so before we dive in, can you please share your name, your location, and the name of your private practice?
Yes. So my name is Brady O'Rourke and I started Braxy Speech Therapy. And right now I'm located in Plainfield, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago. So Braxy Speech Therapy is surveying the surrounding areas and the surrounding suburbs around Plainfield. Awesome. So what I
like to do is before we kind of talk about what your private practice is like now, if you could share a little bit about like either your first job or jobs in the profession, and then at what point did you start thinking about private practice?
Yeah, so I'm a pretty recent grad, I would say. I just graduated in 2021 with my master's degree. I went to Eastern Illinois University for my undergrad and for grad school. And I actually went there and kind of started out in speech pathology because my mom is a speech therapist. She went to Eastern. We have like a whole family history of my whole family going to Eastern. My grandma was a professor there, so... I went there. My sister went there. So that was really fun. Yeah, that's kind of how I picked my college. And then so I graduated in 2021. And before I graduated, when I was doing my internships, I did one in a preschool during COVID. It was all teletherapy. And then a week before I started my hospital placement, it got canceled because of COVID.
And they were like, we have nothing for you. We don't know what you're going to do. Sorry. And so they're like, if you have anyone around you, like reach out. And I had talked to someone that owned a private practice in my area over Facebook like a year prior. And I was like, I'm just going to see if she'll take me.
