Heiley Danfeld is a speech language pathologist with a family focused, growing private practice called Berry Sweet Speech and Language in York, Pennsylvania. She started her private practice while on maternity leave after being in a toxic school environment that she didn't want to go back to because it was affecting her mental health and her family life. Now I got to know Kylie during her time in both the Start and Grow Your Private Practice programs. And it has been absolutely incredible to watch her go from burned out and overwhelmed to thriving and expanding her dream business.
In this episode she talks about how and why she started her private practice during maternity leave. And how she went from having zero clients to building a full caseload in a matter of weeks so that she didn't have to go back to a job that she didn't like and could have the flexibility that she needed for her family. Since then, she's grown her team and is looking to expand even further. If you've been thinking about leaving a toxic job and or starting a private practice so that you have more time and energy for your family, this is a must-listen episode, so stay tuned. I'm Jenna Castro-Kasbon, speech language pathologist, business coach, and creator of the Start Your Private Practice System. And I'm on a mission to turn stuck SLPs into successful private practitioners.

All right, so before we dive in, can you share your name, your location, and the name of your private practice?
Yep. My name is Kylie Danfell, I'm in York PA and my practice is very sweet speech and language.
So I can't wait to share your story or have you share your story because you've done some pretty incredible things and I can't wait for our listeners to hear about it. But before we get there, can you please share a little bit about like how you got started in the profession and then when did you start thinking about private practice?
Absolutely. So I always knew I wanted to be a teacher as a kid. And I started shadowing in probably like 12th grade. And I was like, teaching is not for me. I knew it like as soon as I started shadowing. So I went to my career counselor. I'm like, what do I do? Like I still want to work with kids. And I just had no idea about speech therapy at all. And he paired me with Sarah Peters. She's awesome down at an elementary. school and I loved it. It was a small group, just that more like individualized attention for the kids, not being in a classroom with 20 or 30 kids every day. It was a
Just the variety of everything. So I kept doing some shadowing with different therapists in the area and I actually shadowed a private practice and that was it.
