What inspired Grace Hedgecock to start a neurodiversity‑affirming private practice?

Jena Castro-Casbon 0:00
Starting a private practice isn't what it used to be. Today's clinicians are starting private practices much quicker, easier, and cheaper than before. And they aren't guessing their way through it or getting stuck in analysis paralysis, they're following a tried and true roadmap in order to save time, money, and frustration. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel or struggle to figure out how to start a private practice on your own. We've helped thousands of SLPs and OTs through this process and now we want to help you too. For a limited time, I'm offering a free copy of our private practice roadmap, specifically for SLPs and OTs who are curious about private practice and want to see what the journey looks like.

Welcome back to another episode of the Private Practice Success Stories Podcast. I'm your host, Jenna Caster Kasbon, and I'm thrilled for you to meet today's guest, Grace Hedgecock. Grace is a speech language pathologist and the founder of Hedgehog Speech Therapy in the Bay Area of California. Her journey into this field is deeply personal and inspired by her autistic older brother and by one of his speech therapists who told her, you would make a great speech. Speech therapist Grace. In this episode, Grace shares her path from being a dedicated employee in someone else's private practice to starting her own thriving private practice.

Now, I got to know Grace during her time in the Grow Your Private Practice program, where I helped her take her existing private practice to the next level. In this episode, we talk about everything from that pivotal moment of leaping into full Time private practice where she trusted her faith without a clear safety net. We also talked about how she strategically used preschool screenings to build trust with schools and generate referrals, as well as how she was able to design her ideal schedule in order to prevent burnout and serve both early intervention clients and older autistic clients. So if you've ever felt called to build a private practice that truly reflects your values and life experience, but analysis paralysis has been holding you back.

Grace, I have been wanting to get you on the show because I know that you've had a fabulous journey in private practice, but also some really unique things that brought you to private practice. Before we talk about what your private practice is like now, can you take us back to the beginning, like when you started in the field? And then at what point did you start thinking about private practice?
Grace Hedgecock 4:00
Yeah. So I feel like it goes back to when I was I think maybe in first or second grade. Um, I have an older brother um with autism or an autistic older brother and I saw him doing speech therapy when he was little.
