Okay, so I'm so excited for today's episode where you're gonna hear from me, but you're also gonna hear from the mix of six students on my program, all of which have opened adult medical or specialty private practices. So I think that it's important for you to know that we're sharing these stories because if you want to work with adults or start a specialty, like niche-focused private practice, such as feedback. But in the meantime, I wanted you to hear from alums of the program who've started the same kind of private practices that maybe you dream of starting. And each of these people, each of these SLPs with their backgrounds in adult medical or you know other things, started their private practices without business experience and also without learning much of anything about private practice in grad school, but they were able to do it. So the reason why medically based SLPs become interested in starting private practices. Practices, they do vary, but there are commonalities. For example, they often want to be able to, you know, cut through administrative red tape to be more autonomous and to set their own standards in how they practice.
Also, they want a more flexible schedule and the ability to call their own shots. They're tired of unnecessary meetings, endless documentation, and unrealistic productivity requirements. And they also don't want to be making money for companies who tend to care more about profits than people. And this is exactly where I was when I started my private practice when I was working in an adult outpatient medical facility back in 2006. I was only about a year into the profession and was already feeling stuck. I love my patients, I love my coworkers, but I hated feeling like I wasn't able to do my best work as an SLP due to external limitations. Now I was really lucky to have two coworkers who have their own successful private practices, and they showed me the ropes and took me under their wing to help me build my private practice.
And I started by doing the LSVT training, so Lee Silverman voice training. And I offered my services to adults with Parkinson's. That's how I got my start. And chances are you have done some advanced trainings and you have some advanced knowledge that people in your area would love to access.
