What is the “messy middle” and why does it matter for private practice growth?
Starting a private practice isn't what it used to be. Today's clinicians are starting private practices much quicker, easier, and cheaper than before. And they aren't guessing their way through it or getting stuck in analysis paralysis, they're following a tried-and-trude roadmap in order to save time, money, and frustration. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel or struggle to figure out how to start a private practice on your own. We've helped thousands of SLPs and OTs through this process and now we want to help you too. For a limited time, I'm offering a free copy of our private practice roadmap, specifically for SLPs and OTs who are curious about private practice and want to see what the journey looks like.

I'm Jenna Castor Kaspon, and today we're diving into a topic that hits home for many private practice owners, which is how to know if you're in the messy middle of private practice growth. Now, this month I'm doing some solo episodes because I really want to speak to people who are in the growth phase of the private practice journey and not just the beginners. The growth phase occurs after you get to five private clients and you want more. Why five clients? Well, most people can see five private clients on the side of their job relatively easily.
But once you get to five clients and beyond, time becomes tighter, and you have to decide whether to stay small or to grow your private practice in terms of more clients, which of course requires more time, but also lets you to be able to do more services, which is really cool and something that a lot of private practitioners want to be able to do. The problem is, is that once private practices start to grow, they end up in the messy middle of business growth, which while completely normal and is part of normal growth, the problem is that some private practitioners get to the messy middle and then they stay there, which is why private practice can feel so hard for so many people. This is when many private practitioners seek me out for business coaching and decide to join or grow your private practice program.
Now, my job as a private practice business coach is to help you get through the messy middle as quickly and easily as possible.
How can I tell if I’ve already entered the messy middle of my practice?
So in today's episode, I'm going to be talking about what the messy middle is, how to know when you're there. And if you're already in the messy middle and are feeling completely overwhelmed, what steps you need to do in order to get through it as quickly and easily as possible. So stay. A two. I'm Jenna Castro-Kazvan, CEO of the Independent Clinician and founder of Private Practice School. First, I started my own private practice. And then over the past 15 years, I've worked with over 10,000 SLPs and OTs to start and grow their successful private practices so they can have more freedom, flexibility, fulfillment, and finances. I created the Private Practice Success Stories podcast. to share what's possible for you, your family, your clients, and your community when you choose private practice.
We'll share everything from small private practice side hustles to flexible lifestyle private practices to traditional brick and mortar practices and everything in between. You'll meet regular clinicians, just like you, who followed our steps and are now living their private practice dreams. If they can do it, you can do it too. So let's get started. All right, private practice owners. Today we're going to be talking about the messy middle of private practice growth, which is that challenging phase between the excitement of launching your private practice to when you start to reach a point where you feel stable and successful. Frankly, this is where many private practice owners start to feel overwhelmed, unsure, and stuck.
And the reason why is because you're juggling clients, you're managing administrative tasks, and you're trying to figure out how to grow all at one time.
