How does the first myth – needing years of experience – hold you back?

You know, I remember sitting exactly where you might be right now. Now, at the time, I was 26 years old and I was experiencing early career burnout. Now, we didn't have a term for it back then, but that is exactly what it was. I just remember desperately wanting more from my career as an SLP. And remember, I had just begun that career. I was feeling stuck, but I didn't know what to do. And if I'm being totally honest, the same myths that we're about to discuss are possibly what is keeping you stuck too. One of the things I kept telling myself was that I wasn't ready, that I needed more experience, and that starting a business was too risky. But here's what changed everything for me. I realized that I could start small, just one client, one step at a time.
And that decision, well, it transformed everything. My career, my finances, and my entire life.
What’s the truth about quitting your job versus building a practice on the side?
So let's start with the first and biggest myth, which is that you need years of experience before starting a private practice. Listen to what Patricia said after starting her practice. When I say that it completely changed my life, I mean it. I'm running my own private practice full time and I'm happier than I've ever been in my whole life. Now, I know what you may be thinking, but Jenna, I don't feel ready. Here's the truth. You already have the clinical skills to help clients, and that's what matters most. Your graduate degree, those clinical hours, the skills that you use every single day, that's your foundation. The rest, the business side, that can be learned step by step. The second myth is that you have to make a dramatic leap or jump into private practice by quitting your job in order to start.
But nothing could be further from the truth. Let me tell you about Katia. She started small and now runs a thriving private practice, seeing only the number of clients that she wants to see because she also needs to balance her life as a mom.
