Hello and welcome back to another episode in this private podcast series all about you starting a private practice.

What’s the real cause of burnout – the system or the clients?

Jena Castro-Casbon 2:01
I want to start this episode with a question. Are you tired? Exhausted? Maybe even on the verge of leaving the profession that you worked so hard for? If you've ever thought I can't keep doing this, I'm miserable at my job. There has to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Will things ever get better? You are not alone. Burnout is everywhere in our profession. And here's the hard truth. Burnout is the single greatest threat to you staying in this profession. The very profession that you spent years of your life and tens of thousands of dollars, maybe even a hundred thousand dollars or more in grad school in order to join. So today I want to flip the script. Because while you may think that seeing private clients would only add to your burnout,
Jena Castro-Casbon 2:48
The reality is the opposite, that seeing private clients are actually the path out of burnout. I hear it all the time.

How can seeing private clients actually protect you from burnout?

Jena Castro-Casbon 2:57
Jenna, I'm already stretched too thin. I can't imagine adding private clients on top of my job. Wouldn't that just burn me out even more? It makes total sense why you'd think that. But here's the reframe. It's not the clients that are burning you out. It's the system. The system that is not set up to support you or your clients. It's the overloaded caseloads, the endless paperwork, and the lack of control over your time and your schedule. That is where the burnout comes from, not from the therapy itself. Seeing private clients is a completely different experience. You are in control of your caseload size. You decide how many clients you see, when you see them, and how much paperwork you do. You're paid more for your time.

Your sessions are focused and fulfilling.

What freedoms and controls does private practice give you over caseload and schedule?

Jena Castro-Casbon 3:47
So instead of running on empty, you finally get to be your best without losing yourself in the process. Private clients don't add to burnout, they are the way out of it. And I've seen this play out over and over again with our students inside of the Start Your Private Practice program. So many of my students say that they joined as a last ditch effort to stay in this profession. They were so close to leaving this field altogether. In theory, they loved being an SLP or an OT, but the system was draining the life out of them. In private practice, well, it saved them. Now they're working fewer hours, earning more money, and serving clients that they absolutely love. And most importantly, they're passionate about their work again.
