Rahimi, Harris & Grote Show

Bears are still lobbying for their compensatory draft picks

02 Apr 2026

Chapter 1: What recent developments have the Bears faced regarding compensatory draft picks?

0.031 - 20.021 Leila Rahimi

We mentioned what happened with the stadium and George giving us some answers that, frankly, we needed. Either way, you still needed the answers. They also are rightfully asking about the compensatory picks because you know what else I noticed, Marshall, about the coach composite picture that we like to talk about where all the coaches get grouped up, they sit together.

Then they do the picture of the GMs. Do you know who is in the picture of the GMs? Who? Ian Cunningham.

Chapter 2: Who is Ian Cunningham and why is his departure significant?

27.672 - 33.061 Unknown

Oh, because he's a GM now. He's a general manager. He's a football decision maker in Atlanta.

33.201 - 37.989 Leila Rahimi

And so do you know what the picture was? It was of everybody who's a football decision maker.

0

38.79 - 39.511 Unknown

Funny how that works.

Ryan Poles was in a blazer. He said, I don't care about the heat.

0

43.618 - 51.978 Unknown

Yeah, that wouldn't have been my choice. But Ryan Poles, he's a tough guy, you know? I'm going to look real GM-like for my GM picture with my GM compadres.

52.118 - 63.437 Leila Rahimi

Everybody who knows this knows that our favorite picture of Ryan Poles is the Darth Poles of him in the high neck Canada Goose jacket with the sunglasses. Ray loves to use that one on our social media.

63.557 - 70.909 Unknown

I mean, if you are going to have a picture of you in like a peacoat walking down the field with your shades on, that's probably the coolest pic you could have.

71.108 - 72.715 Leila Rahimi

It is a pick that goes hard.

72.736 - 79.768 Unknown

It's business. It's all business. It's definitely the one we'll use as we try to promote your appearance or your talking point on our show.

Chapter 3: What does the Rooney Rule entail for compensatory picks?

458.279 - 478.604 Marshall Harris

I don't know, but it just doesn't make sense to me. Who does it hurt? And that's why I've called this like a huge unforced error for the NFL from the get-go. Who would have complained If the NFL would have given the Bears the compensatory picks, who would have had standing to say he's really not the general manager? The Falcons are saying he is the general manager.

0

478.865 - 494.32 Marshall Harris

Ian Cunningham saying I am the general manager. It makes no sense that they wouldn't get the two third round picks. And now the NFL is in a box on this one because if they change course, it's a bigger story than it would have been if they just given him the two third round picks in the first place.

495.852 - 524.906 Leila Rahimi

If stubbornness is what is driving this... That is also an equally bad look. But I can't believe the NFL, who did not say anything to lead you to believe that Bad Bunny was not performing at the Super Bowl halftime show or that there was even a concern that that could have happened. There was never an acknowledgement of what Donald Trump had to say about the Super Bowl halftime show.

0

525.147 - 534.959 Leila Rahimi

They did not change. They did not waver. They wanted to go through with it, and they did. I can't imagine, based on that, that this would be an issue suddenly.

0

535.319 - 549.918 Unknown

You say that, but here's why I think you might be mistaken on that. Because this is different because this has legal precedent. The Bad Bunny thing had no legal precedent. It was just, hey, we're trying to grow the game internationally. We're going to put an international star on stage. Deal with it.

550.178 - 554.424 Leila Rahimi

What's law in Florida isn't the law for the rest of the United States.

554.544 - 573.463 Unknown

No, no. You're right about that, but... Executive orders happen every day. And Donald Trump, if he wants to, the president of the United States, can do some type of executive order which would aim to either cap, eliminate, or punish those who try to take diversity into account in any of its decision making.

574.22 - 597.072 Leila Rahimi

Even when it comes to something like this, I do wonder how much Donald Trump factors into the Bears getting two third round picks, one this year and one next year. For a rule that had already had precedent. And similarly, had had precedent in this exact scenario when it came to Ian Cunningham's ascendance that it did years ago with the New Orleans Saints.

597.052 - 611.098 Unknown

That was a different time. And like you said, this rule isn't that old. It's basically a post pandemic or during pandemic rule. And we know what the backlash has been since a lot of things happened in the year 2020.
