All right, so there's some stuff here when it comes to the Bears and their defense that we wanted to talk about. Yeah. Alex, why did you feel like this was an important topic for us to get into?
Well, when you hear the head coach not directly call out the defensive coordinator, but basically say, yeah, we need to coach better on defense. And then you hear the defensive coordinator say, we were focused too much on scheme last year and not technique. You just wonder what type of conversations are going on behind the scenes between head coach and defensive coordinator, and whether or not this is a big year for the defensive coordinator to prove that he is the right person to be the head coach of this defense. It's a funny thing that happened last year where when you looked at Ben Johnson putting the staff together, I think there were two guys that people were ecstatic about.
What is Ben Johnson's vision for the Bears' roster?
One of them was Eric Biennemi. Because people love a screaming coach. And the other one is Dennis Allen because of his resume. Because he is a guy that... And because of the type of defense that we think he likes to play. Like, oh, Dennis Allen, he's going to get after you. He's going to be sending guys. And there is some truth to that in the way that he does things. But their defense last year... did a great job of taking the ball away. And that shouldn't be ignored. It's a part of the ethos of what Dennis Allen wanted to teach. And then, by proxy, Al Harris being out there with a defensive back saying that this has to be a thing that we are out here coaching and believing that we can do. But the Bears defense, I would imagine people would look at it and go, it's kind of their weakness.
Yeah, it feels like... Because you talk about the takeaways. They took the ball away better than any team in the NFL last year. But correct me if I'm wrong, it felt very boom or bust. Like they were either going to come away with an interception or it was going to be a 40-yard gain, right? And so with that in mind, I can understand them this offseason saying – it's really unlikely that you can live like that again and have success. And the way the pendulum usually swings when it comes to taking the ball away, if you don't have a year where those balls turn into interceptions and takeaways, what does it look like for you? Because they were middle of the pack-ish as a total defense. And so I think going into this offseason,
Yeah, you know what the Bears can do offensively. I think we saw, especially in the second half of last season, going into the playoffs, what they could be offensively. And with Ben Johnson as your coach, I don't think people are worried about the Bears and what they do on the offensive side of the football. They didn't do a ton when it comes to addressing that defense, which is why I understand people who are still concerned about it.
