Wait, what's happening here? Showdown gets pulled after six innings of no-hit baseball.
A hundred pitches as we try to figure out the pitch count. And then we're like, oh, maybe this is a good opportunity for the Cubs. And this is a good opportunity for the Cubs. And, yeah, we're in the sunshine and all. And then, boom, Cubs lose 2-0. Buzzkill. Before we then enjoy the pool. Yeah. It's good that there was a pool nearby.
It's good that there were good vibes surrounding us because watching the television screen and seeing this go down, I'm watching in my room for a while because I needed just to mentally recharge. And I was like, oh, every inning that goes by, I'm like, oh, and I'm getting a higher pitch. Oh, every inning it gets a little higher pitch. But wait, but wait.
And I'm looking at the pitch count and I'm like, maybe they could ā it's possible. And I was so disappointed twofold in this game. One, the bottom of the sixth inning, which the Cubs had every opportunity to bust this thing wide open and give Shota some run support.

Chapter 6: What updates did Jed Hoyer provide about the Cubs' pitching staff?
But certainly, we were really careful with his pitch counts. We didn't push him. Obviously, he had the rib injury late in the season. You hope that that kind of surgery He'll last longer, obviously, in this case. You know, he broke down again, and the hope is that he'll have the repair and get back and, you know, get back to where he was. But you have to play. You have to pitch.
I think that's ultimately, like, you know, you can't ā guys are throwing 96, 97 with, you know, great stuff. You have to let them go pitch. I don't think there's ā when I look back, I don't have any ā thoughts or regrets about how we handled him because we were so conservative.
And obviously he broke down. So I just think that that is the nature of pitching in 2026. It's a hard part. You have to build up a lot of depth and we just have to have a next guy mentality.
That was Jed Hoyer before the game yesterday. And I wanted to play it because it's important to point out last year, they were still very, very conservative with how many pitches the Cubs let Kate Horton throw. You know, they feel like they did everything to try to extend the length of his previous Tommy John surgery. And it didn't work, unfortunately. That's nobody's fault, necessarily.
It's sometimes how the body works. No, you feel like... just from an observer's perception that they did everything that they thought to be cautious with Cade Horton in his development and bringing him up. You can go back to last season in the way they brought him up. They had an opener for him for his first major league start.
They were taking every precaution, every step of the way, whether it was making sure that he didn't get too deep into games. They were like, we'd rather have four to five innings of great Cade Horton than stretch it to six or seven. They didn't operate from a place of desperation, and I'm good with that.
I'm good with that decision, and this just goes to show no matter how cautious you are, these things happen with pitchers, specifically with pitchers. Their arms more than likely are going to break down at some point, and you just hope that this is the one and only time for Kate Horton. Well, and now the Cubs have to go about their business as if they're not going to have Kate Horton.
You know, the hope is obviously he recovers from this and that he is back in the Cubs rotation a year from now or whenever he is back and pitching for the Cubs, which will be the slow buildup again. So that's the part that gets me, is that you have this promising first-round draft pick who has had all of these injuries, and now we sit here as we all hang out at Circus Sports and we don't know...
if Cade Horton is a part of the Cubs' starting rotation in the future. That's the scary, sad facts about Cade Horton right now. I'm glad you said again, because we all have shades of waiting for Justin Steele, which we are all still doing together as a society. So Jed Hoyer updated the timeline for Justin Steele.
