What insights does K.C. Johnson share about Tiago Splitter's introductory press conference?
Hi, Tiago. Casey Johnson with the Chicago Sports Network. Welcome to Chicago. Bryson just mentioned your ability to connect with players. And if you read the quotes from the exit interviews with all the Portland players, they also mentioned that same quality. How do you kind of strike the balance of connecting with players while also holding them accountable?
Great question, Casey. I think the first thing you do is connect. I actually already started doing that. I just met a couple of players this morning, texting, phone calls. That's the foundation of everything you do, especially at this level. If you don't have that, it's really hard to demand and make them respect you. But the foundation is connect with the players.
Molly and Haw. 104.3 The Score.
How does Tiago Splitter plan to connect with players while holding them accountable?
Always a delight to talk to our guy, Casey Johnson. He joins us now on the Plumbers 911 Hotline. Plumbing emergency. Call 1-833-PLUM-911. Local 130 Plumbers. Get the job done right the first time. If you're watching on CHSN, you know Casey. And we appreciate you watching. Thank you for your viewership. KC, good morning. How are you, buddy?
I'm doing well. How are you guys doing?
Doing well. We really liked that introductory news conference yesterday.
What qualities of Tiago Splitter impressed reporters during his hiring process?
We're trying to come up with a word for it. David has a good one. He thought they seemed very cool. I got to be honest with you. I use the word honesty because I felt like everybody was just telling you the truth. And I don't want to slander all the previous administrations. But as you know, as you're going through these things, you hear so much of kind of a slightly changed story. It feels like you're getting a lot of obfuscation. And these guys are just wide open about everything. And it was a really good feeling, like spring cleaning feeling with the Bulls yesterday.
Yeah, I mean, obviously we're still just getting to know both these guys, but I would agree. I was going to say transparency, so honesty, transparency, kind of the same thing. They just seem, both of them, and again, I don't know either of them well. I've talked to Tiago twice in my life and Bryson four times in my life, but I would say that they just seem like they're very grounded, comfortable in their own skin, confident. don't really have much to hide, and they're just... Yeah, there was even the comment last night, you know, about, like, you can't fool Chicago sports fans. So, like, why not be honest? I mean, I think Bulls fans are going to allow this duo a lot of grace because there's just a lot of energy and enthusiasm about this youth movement, especially with these first-round picks coming and Noah Senge returning.
So, you know, that's kind of... That was kind of Tiago's message was that I can't promise what our wins and losses are going to be. I can't promise what we're going to shoot from three-point range, but I can promise that we're going to play hard, and that's really all that Bulls fans are expecting next season.
You got a chance to sit down with Tiago Splitter and with Cam Smith during the By the Horns podcast that I think dropped last night, Casey, for an extended period of time. What did you learn during that interview that you maybe didn't necessarily know going in?
Well, I'll answer that in a second. But the first thing I would say about it is we're sitting down to tape it. And, you know, they're setting up our mics and cameras and everything. And Tiago turns to me and Cam and goes, please tell me your background and what your story is. And, you know, you can say that's a small gesture, but that stuff to me speaks volumes about people. And Obviously, this is going to be a relationship we're going to be utilizing moving forward over the coming years. And for him to do that resonated with me.
What unique challenges did Tiago Splitter face during his time in Portland?
That kind of stuff resonates with me. I like to value myself in relationships in this business. And this is the infancy of a new one and an important one. And for him to do that spoke volumes to me. I learned that he... that he loved coming to Chicago as a visiting player, and he has fond memories of playing here, and he knows what the fan base brings and how loud this building can get.
