She is the Cubs beat writer for the Chicago Tribune, Megan Montemurro. Megan, thanks for joining us. Yeah, thanks for having me. That's where we want to start. We knew the news wasn't going to be good. It didn't seem that way anytime anybody spoke about Cade Horton.
What does Cade Horton's loss mean for the Cubs' pitching rotation?
Then we get the news yesterday out for the season, and we've been trying to figure out what's the wins about replacement here. How does this change the outlook and the expectation for the team? If you were asked that question, what do you think? How much is this a loss for this team when it comes to just the win-loss column or the results this year?
I mean, I think it's a loss in the sense of when you get into October playoff baseball, you need some stud arms when you look at the teams that can make those really deep runs. A lot of times it starts with pitching. You look at what happened with the Dodgers. They got their pitchers healthy for the postseason. And for the Cubs last year, not having Steele, not having Cade, losing him right before the postseason, you could see how that impacted them. what they were able to do. So I think big picture wise, it's a huge loss because obviously Cade's upside arguably might have been other than Edward Cabrera, depending on how this year plays out, was among the best on the rotation. And so obviously a huge blow.
If you look at a similar timeline as what Justin Steele has gone through, probably not seen Cade until late May, early June next year, depending on the extent of the surgery when they go in. So, I mean, they have obviously enough starters right now to fill the innings. You know, Colin Ray is getting the start tonight in Tampa, which is where Cade would have slotted in. Javier Assad stepped up for Matthew Boyd yesterday. So they have starting pitching depth, but you're obviously having a drop off in terms of just the sheer stuff. And so obviously, you know, that's really hard to replace, especially this early in the season.
Yeah, Megan, I just made that point. I completely agree with you about the regular season. It shouldn't be as big of an issue, as long as these other starters can stay healthy. They're running out of arm possibilities if somebody else were to go down, especially with Matthew Boyd being on the injured list right now. I got to ask you, with the offense, I feel like because of the hard hit rate and how well they've been hitting the ball even though it hasn't resulted necessarily in hits all the time, that the offense is really going to be leaned on now to be the ones to carry them as far as their, not just regular season potential because the Brewers are the Brewers, but their ability to keep up with offenses in the postseason.
Yeah, and I mean, look, I understand a lot of Cubs fans were frustrated and concerned going into yesterday's game that they were 4-10 to start the season. But I mean, honestly, there's going to probably be more 4-10 stretches over 10-game windows over the course of the season. And I think the fact that they didn't completely bury themselves because of pretty good starting pitching and overall solid defense, that there's going to be times where offenses naturally kind of have the ebbs and flows of the season. But I mean, you, you talk to a card council, you talk to the players in the clubhouse and, you know, there's just confidence that it's going to get going. Like there's too many good hitters.
