I need him to help do what he's doing, which is bring defensive values. We saw one of the best second basemen, arguably could have been on Team USA when it came to the World Baseball Classic. I like his defense in a lot of those situations over the guy they did end up having who's up the street, Milwaukee and Bryce Terang. And then also how he's lengthened the lineup, being a consistent presence. We were talking yesterday on our show about whether or not you put him at leadoff because he's been so consistent. So in my mind, I think you can make the strong argument for Nico being next.
And this is one of those things with Nico coming off his best year of his career. Not only his second gold glove, but as you mentioned, Layla, the consistency, right? 297. He was in the batting race hunt until the final moments of the season. He puts together a 739 OPS. He strikes out 49 times in 649 plate appearances. Let me run that by you again. 49 Ks. and 649 plate appearances.
That used to be a desirable stat that you got paid on.
Until people got drunk off Slug. I get it. Launch angle and whatnot. All of that. But he's like, hey, I bet these singles play pretty well. And he just launched single after single after single. He only had seven home runs. He didn't even get to 30 doubles despite the fact that he had 178 hits. But he did steal 29 bags and only got caught stealing six times. But back to the gold glove defense. And we know baseball teams are built when they're good defensively to be strong up the middle defensively. He is part of that. He's heading into his age 29 year. Give that man a nice three, four year extension, pay him what he's worth. And to your point, Layla, They really do have Nico Horner at home. But will they let him out the house?

And I think that's going to continue for the entire time that he's in this last year of his deal. So as long as that's the case where he's relatively available... I think that that's going to happen. I understand why the Cubs might want to sell high. And you take the call. If you're the GM, you absolutely take the call. But as we've just mentioned, when it comes to the concept of sending a message to your team, being a part of the locker room and also... Growing, you know, being a homegrown player and being able to come off of a career year. I feel like that would be something that you would absolutely want to consider as far as locking players down, especially when for so long.
