What's up, Russ? drop in there from david ross is like so cool like that's it's one of the coolest things in the world and it's so like nonchalant and i remember exactly where i was when that happened that was uh at sloan in arizona spring training 2022 i believe and i just left the beat and i was in cubs camp that day and i'm like pulling up behind the beat and just trying to ease in there not trying to cause a scene and then rossi looks up and gives me the what's up there we go that's how it happened
He always did greet you. Like every time I saw you at Cubs, he'd always greet you by name.
Listen, I think that's one of the coolest relationships you can have is the relationship between beat and manager, right? When you're on a beat for a little while and you build trust with a manager where there's some days where you got to ask the question that needs to be asked and they don't really want to, they don't feel like it that day, but there's an honesty and a trust that's created. And I had that with Roffman.
it's funny because when you work with a team over the course of a season over the course of multiple seasons there becomes this whole like i know you're doing your job so i'll adhere to that but also i see you almost every day man so we got jokes we got inside jokes we got an understanding and i remember that whether it was me when i covered the pirates the phillies uh just going through a manager when there's a really bad season versus when there's playoff aspirations, a team that eventually wins the world series. I mean, it just ebbs and flows.
There's also an importance of like being at the ballpark. Right. I tell people all the time, like even as a, somebody that's on TV a lot now, like being at the ballpark is really important for me because it's important for people to see me and know that like, okay, Russ is here. Russ asks questions. Russ is there. And if there's something I'm mad at Russ for that he said on TV, I can see him about it. And you see, I think for me, like I've seen a lot of different managers covering post seasons, right? Like I have a good relationship with Dave Roberts out in LA and A really good one with Pat Murphy in Milwaukee. But that takes time and people seeing you and having conversations and then you build a trust over time.
So all that to be said, like being there, people seeing you and you building trust is really important, regardless of if you're on the local level or a national person.
Well, it also speaks to relationships. This business, those relationships matter. And it's not necessarily, oh, do you approve of what I'm saying? It's, is there the respect there? And like Dave Roberts, for example, I think he's a really good example because he gets what we do and he talks to people. I think one of the best ones I can think of is, remember the winter meetings where everything revolved around Shohei Ohtani's free agency?
