Well, I'm always in a good mood, especially at this point. I mean, you get up in the morning, you go outside, it's lovely, it's crisp. Then I sit on my balcony trying to smoke a cigar, only to be wearing gloves and a number of other things. So eventually it's going to warm up here, and when it does, the park is even going to be more lively than it's been. But I'm feeling pretty good. The team is a game out of first place, and if anybody told you in the spring that almost the middle of May this team would be a game out of first place, I think that you would have – you would accuse him of maybe drinking a touch too much.
Steve, I mean, we're at the quarter poll, right? So you could start taking some of this stuff more seriously. Early in the season, it's like small sample sizes. But I can look at this White Sox team, and more importantly maybe, look at the rest of the American League Central and the league in its entirety and say, why not the White Sox making a push here in 2026?
Well, I believe you're exactly right, and I was talking with Matt Spiegel the other day about that, and I said, I can't believe that I'm actually saying this, but the Sox have a bona fide shot at the postseason, whether it's winning the division or getting in as a wild card. When Teal comes back and gives you the kind of offensive production that he can give you behind the plate, I think this team is starting to come together. The pitching has been terrific. The bullpen, especially... The back end of the bullpen, what a lot of managers like to call their winning bullpen, when they're ahead, they go to it. It's been very good. Hudson has been terrific out of the pen. And I think a 9 of 11 in save opportunities for Sir Anthony has been outstanding.
So right now, things are going very well. Kansas City's coming to town. Historically, it's been pretty tough on the Sox, so that'll be a measuring stick. And after them, the Cubs will end this longest homestand of the year in a three-game series that I think is going to be electric at the old ball yard.
Well, Stoney, there's a lot of reasons to be really excited about the weekend series for sure. And in the meantime, you're right about Kansas City being a good challenge. The other thing that I wanted to talk to you about, I'm thrilled to be able to discuss, is I think the White Sox have found their stopper. as if we needed more confirmation.
How is Steve Stone's perspective on the White Sox's postseason chances?
Davis Martin now has the second-best ERA in the majors. He allowed one run, three hits, nine strikeouts, and two walks in six innings. Once again, his performances just seem to be consistent, and this even dates back to last year.
Well, I think what's really gratifying about it is twofold, Layla. One is he was a great guy when he wasn't a great pitcher. He still remains a great guy, and he's been a great pitcher in the early going. That kick change that he has refined in the last couple of years has given him a whole lot of confidence. So when he goes out there, he really believes he's going to get it done, and more times than not, he does. The ERA is outstanding. Yesterday was really impressive because it seemed to me very early, and I mentioned it on the air, he really didn't have good stuff coming out of the bullpen and didn't have good stuff in the first inning.
