31.165 - 49.731

is a small preview of the episode no matter what you appreciate most about movies whether it be the dp work the photography work uh directing acting blocking music just symbology in the background whatever it is this movie does all of it yeah but fredo what are your thoughts on this

0

49.711 - 76.697

i mean what else is there to say you get the combination of ryan coogler and michael b jordan and how many times does that hit you know so already you're thinking okay i'm in just because of the duo and then you stack on top of that it's like okay ryan coogler's doing some horror and some creature with deep lore and everything like that and set as a time piece and you know it's like whoa

0

76.677 - 97.082

and then for the ladies you know it's like there's two michael b jordan's so they're like you know he's playing twins twins and like what else can you say that hasn't been said already this movie had uh really high expectations and it is a really really good movie and i know a lot of people out there are like oh

97.062 - 127.069

you know overrated overrated or whatever and i say to that that's just the nature and the culture of online media now sure something gets super popular and then when everyone likes it people are like you know what i want to be different i don't think it's that great i don't think it's that good and look you're entitled to your opinions that's fine i don't think this might this might not be a movie for everybody and i totally get that but i think the craftsmanship that went into this film is astounding and undeniable yeah and that's where i sit

127.049 - 143.455

There you go. Yeah, I love what you said about the craftsmanship because I saw it with some friends and the best way I summarized it when we finished watching, we walked out of the theater. I said, this is the kind of movie that I watch and makes me want to make movies. Yeah, it's deeply thoughtful. In fact,

143.435 - 159.548

I probably won't be able to hold myself back from interjecting with like little just things I've seen on the second go round. Like I just saw, as always, Task Force, you know, I kind of put the movie on as we talk about it in the background. And I already saw just something else just now when we are introduced to Smoke and Stack.

Chapter 2: What cultural themes and symbolism are explored in Sinners?

160.029 - 160.65

It's just...

0

160.63 - 184.292

it's so deeply thoughtful and i and i'm kind of the person who loves to like the first time watch it the second time i love to watch for all the subtleties and the uh foreshadowings and again for lack of a better word like the symbology and the things that are added in um man oh let's dive in it's real good let's get back in let's get in there all right let's break down the plot to sinners

The film starts with a narration about how some music is said to be so powerful that it can conjure spirits from the past and the future. However, it is also possible to attract evil with this power. Cut to Mississippi, October 1932. Sammy Moore drives to a church looking beaten with claw marks on his face while holding a broken guitar neck.

207.023 - 229.549

He enters the church where his father, a pastor, tries to help his son and tells him to give up music and repent his sinful ways. Sammy just clutches onto the guitar neck. What a name. Already on Medium like that. That beginning hits, man. It hits. Oh, it hits. I'm a sucker for those stories that start immediately after all the action has settled.

229.609 - 253.945

And so you're like, oh, how did we get to this point? Mm-hmm. Yep. So yeah, just immediately a hell of a hook. Very good hook. I also love the wide open IMAX aspect ratio here, getting that full screen experience. Mm-hmm. I remember this being the first kind of, of only really a few jump scare moments, right, where the audio kind of spikes.

253.965 - 270.053

And that's what I remember, but I don't remember the flashes to Remick in this scene. I almost had to look it up to make sure that I was like, am I just forgetting this from the first time I watched it? Because the way it like shows his dad gesture him in and it flashes to Remick in the same gesturing. Right.

270.073 - 291.499

And then when they're hugging with the patting on the shoulder to the same gesture that Remick makes on his shoulder, it shows you, it teases you something that is going to be heavily layered over the course of this movie, which is the parallel language of the dad coaxing them to a place of God into the church and Remick coaxing him into a darker place. It's just like, I so deeply appreciate that.
