Hello and welcome along to the RTE Rugby Podcast, sportpodcasts at rte.ie for your emails. It's Champions Cup and Challenge Cup final weeks in Bilbao and Irish interest in both games.
What are the key talking points ahead of the Champions Cup finals?
Ulster taking on Montpellier on Friday evening at San Mames in the Challenge Cup decider. 8 p.m. kickoff and they have to win to secure a Champions Cup spot for next season. Then on Saturday afternoon, Leinster against Bordeaux Begley in the Champions Cup decider, 2.45 p.m. start. Leinster back at the scene of their 2018 title win. Four final defeats since then. We'll also be recapping the Women's Six Nations as usual with Hannah O'Connor. That'll be a little bit later on. But for now, Bernard Jackman is on the couch with us and Johnny Murphy is on the line. And Johnny, first things first, how's the body holding up after the marathon for MND at the weekend?
Yeah, it's not too bad. Walking down the stairs the last couple of days hasn't been that enjoyable. And my toes are actually the worst. I'm probably going to lose three or four toenails. So outside of that, grand. But look, we raised a huge amount of money. We're going to raise probably between the offline stuff over €25,000, around kind of €22,500 sterling. And I suppose with the news coming out of Australia this morning that J.R.O.
How does Ulster's season-defining Challenge Cup match impact their future?
has been diagnosed with MND, you know, he's only 30 years of age. He's played origin multiple times. I suppose it makes it all kind of, you know, my proximity to it, but also stuff like that when it's continuing to happen. It's so important that... We keep shouting about it and try and raise as much money as we can. But the local community, Allistown, Kildare, everyone, Newbridge, Club and School and NACE, it was unbelievable. I'd love to say I really enjoyed it, but I probably only enjoyed it up till about 35k and then I hit the wall. But yeah, look, it was great to do. Most importantly, we raised a lot of money.
Yeah, and I suppose as you say, when that news out of Australia comes out this morning, it puts the toenail pain and all the cramps and sore legs into a hell of a lot of perspective, I would say, yeah?
Yeah, exactly. Yeah. It's kind of shocking when you, when you hear something like that, someone so young. And so, yeah, look, it's, we get, we'll keep driving on and keep talking about it and try and get as much support for the people that have it and, and, and try and raise as much for, for research through kind of the charity that for, for my name is Dottie, which is the charity that Lewis has kind of aligned himself. And then Ed is there for,
for the support for people that have it so yeah we'll keep we'll keep driving on fair play Johnny well fair play for doing it all and for raising so much money on to this week's podcast Bernard let's just get straight into it who's going to win the Champions Cup
What was significant about Munster's recent win against the Lions?
I think Leinster have come full circle. There's been a lot to like about how Leinster have been defending over the last three or four weeks. The energy, the power in their ball carry, the form of certain players, like Joe McCarty stepping up, Hugh Keenan coming in fresh, obviously, and hitting the ground running. The competition between... Robbie Henshaw, Jamie Osborne, Rico, James Lowe being fit. I know Tommy Bryan's a knock. Jimmy Bryan's form has been really good as well. And he'd probably miss out on the 23. So, yeah, Leinster just peaking at the right time. Bordeaux actually looking human, you know, in terms of recent results. Came back from quite a big deficit against Perpignan, but won. But, yeah, Barry had to come on and he scored two tries, I think.
What does Connacht need to secure Champions Cup rugby next season?
And then he was limping. after the game so his fitness it would be a big concern for them have a huge boost to lens if he was out because obviously we know he's got game-changing ability and so much of their game is around on turnover just you know putting it in behind and letting him win the foot race um so yeah there's a nice momentum it's gonna be a brilliant game and uh it's certainly bordeaux are are worthy favorites because of They have the best form, but there's a lot to like about Leinster recently.
