Two great losses in Irish rugby. First of all, last Thursday, it was confirmed that legendary Irish back row Fergus Slattery died at the age of 77. And then on Monday, it was announced that another former Ireland international and the long-term CEO of the RFU, Philip Brown, passed away in his mid-60s. Two real... Real tough, tough losses for Irish rugby. Obviously, Fergus Slattery, a true legend of the game, not just with Ireland, but when you look at the plaudits that came in last week, one of the real rugby greats from across the world.
An absolute legend, respected and loved around the world. Gave a huge amount back to the game, Blackrock College in particular. post-retirement was a brilliant afternoon speaker and spoke extensively in the UK and Ireland and was an unbelievable competitor and it was very, very sad to read a couple of years ago. David Walsh did a big piece on his dimension and his struggles with that but the reaction to his passing I think showed how I love the respect he was not just in Ireland, but around the world with teammates and opponents. And then Philip Brown, you know, Philip Brown was the safest set of hands. I think, you know, Irish rugby could have had as they went from amateurism to professionalism and how he went about his business, how he treated people, how much he was respected internally and also on a world level dealing with people in world rugby and football.
the Six Nations, etc. And yeah, just he's a huge loss. And the way he didn't really get the plaudits because he just kept under the radar. Because he didn't go looking for plaudits. No, exactly. He was just someone that, as I said, people trusted and would go for counsel. And when he needed to step up in need, he led. And yeah, condolences to both the Slattery and the Brown family and friends.
Yeah, I like personally, I wouldn't have had any real dealings with, well, certainly Fergus Slattery. He was obviously long before my time as a player, but yeah.

even Philip Brown was probably just finishing up at the RFU when I started really full time onto the rugby beat only would have ever had a couple of dealings with him and I would say boring in the greatest sense of the word for the job he was doing as CEO of a governing body Gareth would you ever have had any interactions or dealings with the two down the years?
no unfortunately i hadn't i just sort of got to see it from afar though but obviously you know two big two big characters in irish rugby world renowned um obviously the way fergus played the game um i'd have been probably a little bit before my time as well but definitely very aware of what he did and was somebody that you'd looked up to whenever you looked at the lion series and stuff like that as well so like you know condolences to the family there and obviously with philip um Somebody who was in round, I suppose I was coming through very young with Irish rugby, was very aware of who was actually the CEO of it. But again, my dealings wouldn't have been an awful lot. But the way he's carried himself and what he's done for Irish rugby over his tenure, three decades of being involved in the Irish rugby system.
