Growing up. nearby where I lived was a small cottage that I really enjoyed visiting and if you knew where it was that I grew up you'd understand why it is that I enjoyed visiting this cottage because I didn't really live in a particularly old place I lived in a relatively new housing estate. You know, all the buildings, houses, nearby, my childhood home, were fairly new.
I don't think many were built before 1970. And so we're talking about, you know, these red brick, kind of flat facade, tile-roofed, flat, UPVC window kind of houses, you see. And so the fact that there was a whatland orb, hay-thatched roof cottage anywhere near where I lived, was quite unusual, and the way that you would get to it was also kind of unusual as well. So it was nearby my local park, the park where I used to play with my friends, almost every day in summer. I'm not sure it was the park that was closest to my house, but it was definitely the park that was closest to the center of all of us to meet, if you see what I mean. And so that's where we would go. And it wasn't a particularly impressive park.
I think it was essentially a large square patch of grass. And in one corner was a little play area with some swings, a slide, sort of like a jungle gym set up. But it was a place to go.
How does Andrew describe the surprising cottage he discovered near his childhood park?
It was a place we could meet. But just off to one side, the far end of this park was a little path, a little gunnel you could call it, that was quite narrow and on either side was fenced by large hedges. And they would in fact sort of overhang and create a canopy, an archway over top. So as you walked through it, you could naturally see the sky above you. And I'll always remember walking down that little path on a sunny day. And I'll remember the shimmering dappled light on the floor that would filter through the leaves above your head. And this sort of added to the magical effect. You sort of already began to feel like you were entering into a different place as you were walking down here. And on this path, it was technically a public footway.
But it didn't lead anywhere. to anywhere open or public it was a path that sort of ran down the back of several sets of houses and halfway down this path you could turn off left and you'd find your way to a little corner shop and that's where we all used to go and buy our penny sweets and I'm really showing my age there But if you carried on down the path, right at the end, you'd end up curving. You'd make a curve over to the right. And then suddenly, things would open up. And you were still surrounded by these high hedges and now even so tall trees that extended the canopy over your head. But then in front of you was this, like I say, old-fashioned Wotland Orb cottage. The little brown wooden fence, picket fence, that surrounded the perimeter.
And a little brown wooden gate at the front. and a pebbly path that led up to an old-fashioned wooden door and in the front on the patch of lawn just before the cottage was this quintessential wishing well made of brick stone and even having a little tiled roof above it and a tin bucket that swung in the middle attached to the winch. I don't think it could look any more like a fairy tale if it tried. And like I say, it was always so mystifying and unusual to come across this old, old cottage in a place that seemingly otherwise didn't really have much history at all. And it's funny how it managed to hide itself away as well. You know, because you could carry on down this path and it would lead you out into the road where the rest of the new build housing estate was.
As I said before, it was fringed by these high trees and bushes.
