The very first mountain I ever scaled was Snowdon in North Wales, or more accurately called Ierwyddfa, I think in Welsh. I'm probably not pronouncing that correctly as I'm not a native Welsh speaker, but it's at least closer to the real name than Snowdon is. I actually don't know why the mountain is called Snowdon in the English language. I presume it has something to do with somebody who may have scaled it themselves. You know, a la Everest, for example. but Snowdon was the first mountain that I scaled. I suppose the first time I did it was when I was very young, perhaps one years old, and to describe the ascent as Having scaled the mountain would probably be quite a generous description because I was in fact ferried to the top by the rail service that runs there.
It is a very easy way to get. Basically, all the way to the top, without actually having to do the walk yourself. And of course, as a one-year-old, that would have been quite a difficult task. And I suppose, an even more so difficult task for my parents at the time to try and ferry me up there on foot. And so... Up we went, and I remember very little of that experience myself, but as my dad tells it, we get to the top, and he's just absolutely covered in fog. And, whilst they were expecting that there might be a glorious panoramic view of the landscape around them, what they actually found was thick, cloudy fog. I say fog, almost certainly clouds themselves, because the altitude was definitely high enough to be bright in amongst the clouds.
And so a little bit disappointing, I think. And apparently a little bit scary as well for my parents, who were also trying to usher up the mountain. My slightly older brother, who was a toddler at the time and able to walk around And with these sheer cliff drops knocking around in amongst the dense cloud, they didn't stay up there for too long before coming back down on the next train.
