Chapter 3: What defensive strategies did Burnley employ against Palace?

He strikes it well. I mean, that shows you why you have men on the post. He's very clever, he gets back on the post and gets himself in a good position, Loughton, and Tarkovsky did the same as well, and these are big opportunities that they missed, and you could just see, but that Burnley defending for their lives, Tarkovsky was magnificent today, I thought, Alan, didn't you?
Yeah, he was brilliant, and the block he gets in on this chance is, like, even going back to his own goal, he's managed to clear it. I mean... You felt it was going to be Palace's day in the end, didn't you? You thought it might be coming. I thought they deserved a goal. I mean, you know, if you look at the manager and saying... Then you have to look at the team and say that the team are not working for him or trying. My goodness, they tried everything second half. They couldn't have done much more with what they had on the pitch. In fact, I think they're lacking some offensive players. I don't know how many injuries he's got. Zaha's a big one.
Zaha's a big miss, of course, but you'd like to think they'll have a couple more options coming off the bench. This is the biggest chance. And to be fair to Christian, I don't think he's done a lot wrong there, but the goalie has done a fantastic stretch with that left foot and very important to secure the points for Burnley.

What did you think of Palace today?
I thought they'd done well, I think the second half especially. Especially after going the goal down, they could have collapsed with the pressure they've had and maybe the lack of confidence. But I think for sure they definitely deserve something out of the game.
Listen, you maybe start the game poor like that, but what else can you do when you get chances like that and they just don't go for you? I think they're in a moment where the confidence isn't there and they're just lacking that little bit of spark. They just need that goal. Obviously, no goals in four games. And, you know, in terms of an offensive away performance, 38 crosses and 13 corners should give you a goal. I mean, just on the stats-wise, that should be a goal. But, unfortunately for Palace, it wouldn't come today. It's just the worst possible start for them, isn't it? We said it'd be half-time. The manager sets his team up. First 20 minutes, just keep it tight, don't make any mistakes.
And then Chun Li decides to do this. I just... I don't know what to say, why he's doing it. But what I will say is that it's such a good finish. It really is. Wood anticipates it. Because it's not easy. I think his mind gets made up because the keeper comes out, Hennessy, and probably... Makes it easy for him, but he looks up. Great side foot, bends it round him. Really good finish.
What a start to his career. Scored at Wembley against Tottenham and then obviously today in his home debut.

Really good finish. You can see Hennessy comes out, makes up his mind. That's a good side foot. He froze his head at it. I mean, I don't know what he's meant to do there. They've got to work on things and almost an identity crisis for me still. They've got to get Zaha back in that team as well. He makes a big difference to them. They're not going to panic, Alan, are they, after four games? Not after that performance, in my opinion. I think that performance was a performance of a team away from home trying to win.

Yeah, I think everybody who was in the stadium... We're sitting behind the television. I think there was only deserving one team to win today and it was us. But it's football and sometimes you don't get what you deserve. But yeah, we can also blame ourselves to give a goal away and what you already mentioned. and not scoring our 100% opportunities.

But the most important thing I always think is if you're going to play like this every week, you get what you deserve and that's going to be the point. Football is about making goals, not... No doubt about it, and we have to do that much better, of course.
