Hello and welcome to this special Sky Sports Football podcast where we're looking at who deserves a place in the Premier League team of the season. Along with this podcast, there will be features, analysis and pundit opinion running on the Sky Sports website and app throughout the course of the week from Monday the 6th of April. There was huge debate over whether Henderson, De Bruyne or Mane should take top spot. In the end, after over 50,000 of you voted on the Sky Sports website Mane emerged as the winner just ahead of Henderson I wonder how many Liverpool players will be in your team of the season I'm Peter Smith the Sky Sports Football Features Editor and joining me to kick the debate off is Sky Sports Football journalist Lewis Jones Lewis how are you?
Yes doing well in good form Pete good to speak to you Good good we've also got Ron Walker on the line Ron how's things? Yeah very good thank you very good Good good how are you keeping busy? Oh Netflix doesn't know what's hitting to be honest Yeah Lewis crashing through the box sets?
Well, yeah, there's been plenty of lockdown highs, lows, but mostly mediocre moments while we just sit on our hands and wait for some positive news regarding when football is going to start again, I think.
Yeah, yeah. It's, according to Premier League meeting on Friday, suspended indefinitely. It's, yeah, it feels like it's a long way off. But what we can do is we look back at what we've had already this season because plenty of good matches to reflect on, plenty of good performances to reflect on. And, yeah, Not really easy to pick a team of the season. I think we've all had a crack through this morning to try and whittle it down to 11. Not easy. I'm sure there'll be a bit of debate. So let's get into it then. Lewis, let's kick us off then. Goalkeeper, who's your number one of the season so far?
Well, yeah, I found this one one of the probably the most complicated to work out really in terms of picking a standout goalkeeper because I was trying to sort of calculate how many points a goalkeeper has won for their side and it's actually quite hard to quantify that but I sort of try to engage my brain to remember sort of the big moments that certain goalkeepers produced over the season and the the one that that stood out to me was Nick Pope at Burnley who's been yeah he's been a he's been a huge player for Burnley for the last sort of 18 months or so he's he's incredibly reliable consistent commands his area brilliantly but From my memory, he's made some telling interventions throughout the season, which has played a huge part in sort of surging Burnley up the table.
The one that sticks out to me was his penalty save against Jamie Vardy against Leicester back in January, which sort of proved the catalyst for their upturn in results. It was 1-0 at the time, I think, and Leicester were sort of dominating the game and the atmosphere was turning very negative at Turf Moor and Vardy steps up to take the penalty and Pope read it and made a huge save and Burnley went on to win that game 2-1 and then I think they went on a seven match unbeaten run after that game which sort of sawed them into mid-table and as the season finished I think they're sort of pushing for a European spot so yeah he stands out for me and he's also no Premier League goalkeeper has made more clean sheets than Pope this season which is a pretty staggering statistic considering the teams involved like
I mean, Liverpool and Leicester are charging at the top of the division. So, yeah, it's a pretty remarkable achievement for Pope.
Yeah, it's 11 clean sheets he's racked up this season. I guess the story that always comes along with Pope is what's going on with Pickford. And who's England number one, really? At the other end of the table, Jordan Pickford has conceded 46 goals. That's the most by a single goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.
