What recent football news is discussed at the start of the episode?
Welcome to the Goals on Sunday podcast. Joining Cami and me today, Luis Garcia, of course, Champions League winner with Liverpool, and Oli Murs, super sensational England captain for Soccer Aid, the last man to lift a trophy at Old Trafford. Talking about all the relevant goals, all the incidents, and of course, Claude Puel losing his job at Leicester. Enjoy. Good to have you with us this morning. How you doing, Cammy? Couldn't be any better. You? Yeah, well, really good. And then we're suddenly sort of coming on air as this news has broken that Leicester have sacked Claude Puel. Interesting. Lots of speculation over the last, well, how long would you say? It's been coming, Ben.
Why was Claude Puel sacked as Leicester manager?
It's been coming for a long time. And I think one of the factors is the Jamie Vardy factor as well. Basically because Jamie plays in a certain way and Claude has been trying to get him to change the way that he plays. Because he says if teams play deep against them, so there's no space in behind, he wants him to come and link up. Whereas we all know that it's strength, he is... Good at running in behind. One of the best in the league at that. Playing on the shoulders of the defenders. So, work on that. I'm not saying that's the deciding factor, but one of the factors.
Well, this is what they've said. Leicester City Football Club have today Sunday party company with Claude Puel, who leaves his position as first team manager with immediate effect. The club would like to thank him for his efforts of leading the team during his 16 months in the role. Wishing well for the future.
What factors contributed to Leicester's recent struggles?
Assistant manager, Jackie Bonavay, also departs the club with best wishes. First team coaches, Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler, supported by the club's established backroom staff. Adam Sadler? Adam Sadler, supported by the club's established backroom staff, will assume responsibility for the senior quad while the club begins the process of appointing a new manager. There was sort of an indication, of course, that this might happen because they've sort of set this pattern up, Leicester, more recently. Claudio Ranieri was sacked having gone six games without a win in the Premier League. Craig Shakespeare was sacked having gone six games in the Premier League without a win. Yesterday, Claude Puel... was six games in the Premier League without a win.
So whatever you do, if you come on... It's the magic 666.
Do not... But interesting, though, Leicester fans out there, maybe you've got an idea of who you would like to replace Claude Puel. Would you like to see Stowley do it with Sadler as well? Could they take it to the end of the season?
I think Mike Stowler's just happy to be there. So he'll just be taking the reins for a short while.
Luis Garcia is our guest this morning alongside Oli Murs.
Morning, gents.
Love that you show all these great goals and it means me getting tripped over by Mourinho.
What's your highlights, though? It was great, thank you.
I've seen him on Soccer AM just hitting the ball and putting it in the top corner.
I've just tweeted that. I had to put that up just to show you what I can do.
Luis, did you know, though, he had capped in England? I mean, he's the England captain, the last one to lift the trophy at Old Trafford as well.
I didn't know.
It's great, Oli, to have you on the show at last. We've been trying for a long time. It's lovely to have you here for the first time as well.
How's things? What are you up to at the moment? A bit of everything, to be honest. When I retired, I didn't know what to do, and I started, well, doing some muscle for Liverpool, traveling a lot. We move around trying to bring a little bit, a piece, a small piece of Liverpool to kids and supporters around the world. And I'm doing also for La Liga and for UEFA. I'm doing a master with UEFA trying to understand a little bit what is the the the football around the business around football not just the coaching side and i will start my coaching license in in may so a little bit of everything and here enjoying a little bit of tv because make me i follow a lot of football so i enjoy
