I'm Sarah Lamarquand, your host, and every week I sit down with some of the biggest names in the country because when Australia's celebrities are ready to talk, they come to Something to Talk About. When Melissa George became a household name in Australia at just 16, she had little idea that three decades later she'd still be acting and have built an international career that has taken her to Hollywood, London, Paris and now New Zealand. It all started, of course, on the northern beaches of Sydney.
We were only allowed to watch Home and Away. And so the fact that I got the lead of Angel at 16 on our favourite TV show, my parents were like, how the hell did that happen?
But away from the cameras, life over the years has been just as eventful. A mother to three boys, Melissa is raising her family in France, looking ahead to her 50th birthday and starring in the new binge dark comedy, Ms X.
And that's when the survival of a mum is at its peak, when you take a job that you know that they're not going to be eating baguette and butter, they're going to be eating sushi maybe, you know, or they're going to go on a better holiday or they're going to have a better life.
On today's episode of The Stellar Podcast, Melissa reflects on career longevity, motherhood, the heartbreaking loss of her former Home and Away co-star, Dita Brummer, and why she finally feels at peace with the woman she's become. Melissa George, welcome to The Stellar Podcast. Thank you. Nice to be here. For you and me, Melissa, this is the first time I've seen you since 2006, on set of a film that you shot with Josh Hartnett called 30 Days of Night and was filmed in in New Zealand. So it feels like a little lovely full circle moment for me to see you again, but also your new project, Ms. X, which is dropping on Binge this weekend, June 30, that was also filmed in New Zealand. And you play a character who finds herself caught up in the Auckland criminal world.
So lovely full circle moments of sorts.
Love it. It was lovely for me to arrive and see the same crew. And you get the comment like, wow, it's been two decades, but we're all still here. We're all still working. And it was one of the greatest experiences. I mean, 30 days a night, of course, but going back as a grown woman and remembering all the places I visited. Of course, I forgot a lot, but just to be there with the New Zealand energy is just wonderful. It's, dare I say, very similar to home. I start seeing things and in my mind I'm like, am I in Australia? No, I'm not. Oh, but it's so close. Oh, you know, but you feel like I was coming home, which was really nice.
Let me ask you a little bit about the character that you play in Miss X. It's Mia Bennett. She's a, as I mentioned, she's a suburban mom in New Zealand who finds herself caught up in the criminal underworld in Auckland, as you do, and she's navigating that while trying to deal with PTA politics and school homework. On the surface, it seems incredibly far removed from the life of Melissa George, glamorous teenager. Television and film star, jetting around the world to shoot on location, attend fashion shows. But of course, you are a working mother yourself. Are there more parallels than might appear?
It's fantastic, actually. That's what drew me to the role was the fact that you have this sort of washed up, really suburban mum that doesn't really have much going on except the ring on her finger. She goes to all her friends, I'm married. You know, she's very proud that she's been married. And then she finds herself doing such criminal things because she has to in order to survive to protect her family. But she treats all the mafia and the gangsters and the drug dealers and the PTA moms like they're her children. You know, like, have you eaten? What? wear the appropriate outfit. And she ends up being one of the greatest mafioso bosses that New Zealand's ever seen just because of what her husband put her through without giving too much away.
