Do you ever feel like you are the best kept secret at work? Well, today in this episode, we're going to help you to be finally seen as the leader that you are. On the show today, we have Lorraine Kay Lee, who has empowered thousands of people through her courses on LinkedIn and at Stanford. And her mission is to help leaders amplify their presence and impact. And today you're going to become one of those people who shares in her wisdom to help you to be able to have the presence that you deserve. Stay tuned. Hi, I'm Karen Reed. I'm a four-time author, Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist, and communication expert on helping people to own the room, whether it be a physical one or a virtual one. Welcome to Speaker Dynamics.
Lorraine, it is such a delight to have you on the show today. Thank you so much for taking the time because I know looking at all of your LinkedIn presence, you are one busy person.
Yeah, I I had to make time for this. I'm so excited to chat today.
Yeah, it's been several years since we originally talked and you were just b beginning to grow your business. So it's been really exciting for me to watch you really come into your own and have such a a great impact across so many different spheres of influence. So one of the things that you did recently is you wrote a book. Right here, Unforgettable Presence. And I actually told you, but I'm gonna prove it. I have taken a bunch of highlights to all the pages. I was reading it on the plane on the way to a client engagement, and the person beside me was finally like, What are you reading? You're highlighting like the entire text. And so I showed him and he took a picture of it. So he was excited to read it.
But Unforgettable Presence is is a fantastic read. So congratulations. Congratulations on that. I have to ask you, what does what made you decide to write the book?
So it wasn't anything that like I had a dream to write a book for my whole life. But what ended up happening was I started my business and about a year in, a publisher reached out to me on LinkedIn and they asked if I had ever thought about writing a book. And before that, I had a few former colleagues who kind of planted the seed who had asked me as, Well, have you ever thought about writing a book?
How did Lorraine’s LinkedIn experience inspire her book *Unforgettable Presence*?
And I hadn't. But then after they said that, I thought, hmm, this This kind of makes sense. And so by the time the publisher reached out and I had to write my proposal, I really thought back to what would this book be about? And it brought me back to earlier on in my career, I was a founding editor at LinkedIn. I was someone who was well liked, respected by my peers. I worked really hard, worked on high priority projects. But as hard as I tried, I could not figure out how to get proposed. promo promoted from my mid level position into a senior management position. And I wanted it so badly, but I just it just wasn't happening for me. And after leaving LinkedIn, I had more time to reflect, to talk to mentors, to talk to peers and figure out what was I doing wrong?
Because on paper everything seemed right to me. And what I came to realize is that a big piece of what I was missing was presence in terms of how others saw me. A few months later I joined a company called Prezi. And then a few months later, COVID happened. And then I realized when our whole world went virtual, well, presence is not just about how you see me and how I'm showing up in person, but where is your presence felt? Where are you being seen? Because now we have a video presence. As you mentioned, Karen, we have a LinkedIn presence. We have presence in the small talk conversation at the start of a meeting in the way we send that Slack message. And I really wanted to Make it clear that presence was this formula, how and where you are seen.
It's not just about executive presence and those big high-stakes moments, but rather our reputation and our presence and trust and credibility are built in those sometimes seemingly small moments that we have throughout the day, but they happen much more frequently.
