Hey everybody, it's Carrie Clark, and you are listening to episode number 54 of the Speech and Language Kids Podcast. This is the podcast with resources and activities for speech therapists as well as parents of children with speech and language delays. And today we are talking about middle school social skills. So we are going to dive in with some work for you on how to do how to work on social skills. skills with your middle school age kiddos. That would be grades six through eight if you are somewhere where you do not use the term middle schoolers. But that is what we're talking about today. But before we get into that, I do want to give you just a brief overview of what's going on with speech and language kids because I do have some changes coming down the line.

So if you have been to the website recently, you will have noticed my new website design. So we have completely overhauled the entire site. I have uh hired on a team of developers to help me with this and we've basically gone through and made it all a lot more user-friendly. It was um There's a lot of information on the site. I've been doing this for three years now. So there are, I think, over 400 posts on the website of just different guides and information and how to do different things. So it was getting a little bit Crazy to say the least. So I had them come on and help me reorganize everything, get it all categorized and uh put into a really nice package, and I just think it looks phenomenal. So if you haven't been over lately, you definitely need to go check it out.

So definitely check it out. But along with the re redesign. I am doing some redesigning of I guess what I'm doing. So so my work for the site. So up until now I've been putting out one single blog post slash podcast every week and it's on the same topic. It's basically the same information. I just speak it out loud for the podcast. And what I'd like to do is I'd really like to dive into some topics in more depth. Like I said, there's a ton of information on the website already, so I feel like I've done a good surface level coverage of most topics under under the speech therapy umbrella, at least the main ones. So what I'd really like to do now is dive into some more depth on things. So in order to do that, I need to back off the frequency of how

often I am putting out new content. So here's my new plan. Are you ready for this? So each month I'll pick a theme and for each month I will write one in-depth blog post. that will be kind of uh either an ultimate resource page or it will go into depth on one specific part of that topic. And then I'll do one podcast per month on the topic. And I will do one video per month on the topic, which I haven't been able to do a ton of videos, but I I have had a lot of people asking me for more videos. Um where I do demonstrations of different therapy techniques. So we'll be doing a video each month. And I'm going to try, try, try. It's not gonna happen this month probably, but hopefully by next month, I'm gonna really try to get a free webinar each month that's gonna be a make and take.

So you'll log on, I'll give you the materials ahead of time, and while you're listening to me give the webinar, you'll be making a therapy material that will sort Serve the purpose of whatever I'm teaching you. And then hopefully I'm gonna set it up so that you can get continuing ed credit for attending with me. Uh it would just be a half an hour and it will be limited to the first hundred people in the door because that's how much my software will hold. Um but that's that's the plan is that I would have a free continuing ed webinar. Each month that you guys could could join me for to get some of your continuing ad out of the way. So that's a lot of new stuff, but it's stuff that I think is really gonna help you guys.

That especially the videos and the webinars, those are things that I'm not doing right now. And I think that if I back off to once a month on the podcast and the blog post, then I will be able to have time to do those other things.

Social Skills Lessons for Middle School | Speech Therapy Goals and ActivitiesWhat social skills should middle school students have? What can we do to help 11-14 year-olds who are struggling with social skills? What are some social skill lessons for middle school that we can use in speech therapy or in the classroom? On this page, we’ll show you what social skills to work on with middle school students. We’ll include sample goal ideas, activities, and lesson plans. Social Communication CurriculumsStructured, No-Prep Programs for Teaching Social Skills to Middle School StudentsView the Social Communication CurriculumsHow to Teach Social Skills to Middle School Students:Many of our children with language delays also have trouble with social skills.  This may be due to certain conditions that impair social skills, like autism, or it may just be because these children have trouble learning language and social interactions rely heavily on language skills.  Whatever the cause, one of the best ways to help improve social skills is through the use of social skills groups.  Doing social skills training in a group setting allows children to practice new skills with their peers instead of just talking about them theoretically.  Practice is crucial for these children to actually be able to use those skills in real life. However, knowing exactly how to run a social skills group can be tricky.  I’m going to present you with some great social skills activities for middle schoolers (ages 11-14 years). Topic Maintenance Announcing Topic Shifts Not talking too much (ask the other person questions) Responding to others with relevant information Not asking personal questions Keeping secrets and respecting someone’s privacy Including enough information for the listener to know what you’re talking about Using clear speech with complete sentences Beginning and Ending Conversations Vocal Volume How to Listen Thinking about others Using clues in conversations (making inferences) Approaching and entering a group conversation Not perseverating on a topic Making small talk How Should I Choose Social Skill Targets and Goals for Middle School? Observe student in natural interactions with peers (host a lunch group or push-in (“supervise”) during lunch or free time) Ask teachers what social problems they’ve noticed Ask the child what he has trouble with in conversation or when things seem to break down Ask the child’s friends (with his permission) Observe other children his age in typical interactions and see what they are doing that the student is not How to Run a Social Skills Group for Middle Schoolers: Choose one topic per session (or one topic for several sessions) Read a story or watch a video about the topic or give a scenario where the skill was not used correctly and have the students identify what went wrong Explain the skill to the children and write out rules for the situation or scenario Have one or two students come up to the front to demonstrate the skill in a staged scenario that you control and plan out Ask the students questions about the rules of this topic Have students pair off and practice the skill while you watch and provide feedback Come back together and ask questions again to ensure comprehension. Watch the video again or read the book again. Assign each student to write in a journal about one time that they used the skill (either correctly or incorrectly) and review at the beginning of your next session Check to see if the students retained the info during the next session. If not, repeat these steps.
