Translation: don't expect the US to suddenly agree to a peace deal right now. Well, throughout this weekend, each side continued to threaten escalation. The president said he would not rule out wider strikes. Iran began to To insinuate it might start attacking ships as far away as the Indian Ocean. Well, cut to yesterday morning, even further away, a couple hours west of London, police said they had thwarted a bomb plot.
It wasn't clear what this was. What was clear though was how sensitive the location was. An airbase that has been used by the US military for decades. Let's start the week with ABC's foreign correspondent Lama Hassan in London now. Llama, can you just walk us through what happened?
So, Brad, police are declaring this a major incident. We understand the counter-terrorism police are now leading this investigation, which just shows you the severity of this incident. We heard from the Assistant Chief Constable in Gloucestershire, that's the area where the base is. And interestingly, he read a statement on camera. He didn't take any questions, but we got an idea of what happened in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police received a call relating to three suspicious vehicles travelling towards RAF Fairford. This is the base that is being used by the US to launch operations in Iran. Armed police quickly responded to this call and arrested five men on suspicion of terrorism and explosive offences.
The men were taken into custody where they remained. They are being held and questioned by detectives. And just as a side note, under the Terrorism Act, police can keep them in custody for up to 14 days without charging them.
How did British police respond and what details are known about the arrests?
They are serious offences. At this point, we don't know anything about these men, but what we do know is that RAF Fairford is on lockdown. Armed police, they're blocking the entrance to the base. We saw them use bomb display. disposal robots to examine the vehicles at the scene. There is a four hundred yard cordon in place. As a precaution, around eighty-five households have been advised to evacuate while these examinations take place. Now on the base itself they've raised the threat level to Delta, which is the highest alert level.
