What is the main focus of the episode and who is the guest?
Hey guys, welcome to Stronger. I just had on Nikki Parlitzis, who works over at Michelle Shapiro Nutrition. You guys know Michelle is one of my past guests, and Nikki specializes in everything from emotional eating to binge eating to autoimmune disorders to gut health. I mean, there's so many areas we could have covered today, but on this episode, we kept it right at emotional eating and binge eating. Main takeaway from Nikki is she's so smart, she can come in with all the science back stuff, but she's so relatable and she's able to just sit there and have a conversation that you understand. And she's very soothing in the way that she speaks. And it's it's very obvious why she's as good at what she does.
So um, if you guys enjoyed Michelle Shapiro, you're definitely gonna love uh this episode as they are cut from the same cloth and I think the world of both of them. So So let's get started with Nikki. Thanks guys.
So we met through Michelle Shapiro. I'm trying to think. You and I have met in person several times. And what was the first time? Can you remember it? Because I can't I mean it's gotta be
I think the first time in person was at well, Michelle has mentioned me, I think, because she's just she's always like chit chatting about she says, Were you
at Gabriel's event though?
Yes, it was that it was Dr. Gabriel and um the book launch, her most recent book launch. Most recent book on the yeah.
Michelle surrounds herself with incredible people. She's an amazing person. She's phenomenal what she does. And that's why I'm really excited because I've been kind of, you know, diving into your social a bunch. And I've been watching you on YouTube or or or Instagram and um just getting a real feel. And and what I what I love about you is how relatable you are, right? Like you come in here, first off, you're Italian and Greek, so It's just like, you know, me and you have this thing hit there. But um I I think what's a pro somewhat of a problem in the industry right now is I think information is just so it's everywhere. And people are just trying to wow the next person by making things really technical.
And I think it's there's this is a day and age where people are feeling very vulnerable, probably more than most, because there is so much information. They're like, well, this person's saying this. And What the hell did that person just say? You make things incredibly re relatable. And there's so many areas we can go in today. Like we said, binge eating and emotional eating is one I want to cover. Autoimmune conditions. Um, there's a lot that we can cover there. And then obviously the gut health, which ties into everything. I want to kick this off with um binge eating and emotional eating today because. You know, a line uh that was always present, Oh, it's eighty percent, it's it's Stop. This is a hundred percent mental.
What is going on? Why are people struggling with this so much? And um, it could be your gut, it could be that, you know, maybe you really do have a poor affiliation with food. So just kind of give me the the I want to start with like an eighth grade level. Let's let's get people comfortable right now on your experience with this.
Yeah. So I like to kind of separate them a little bit, binge eating versus uh emotional or stress eating, because binge eating disorder is an actual diagnosis. It's in the DSM. there's a clinical basis for why, you know, what would constitute binge eating. So binge eating itself is really eating a large amount of food while feeling a loss of control. So those are the two biggest points and the thing that I care most about with my clients is the loss of control piece because there is this concept too when it comes to stress or emotional eating where sometimes people say, and this is a big problem in the eating disorder world is there's this concept of not feeling sick enough. I know when I was going through my eating disorder, I would Google, you know, do what is this a problem?
And there would be, you know, it's only a problem if it happens twice a week or three times a week.
