I don't think he's necessarily going to be someone who's going to be on a lot of highlight rules for Manchester United next season. But given a good playing environment, working alongside players like Bruno Fernandes, I think there is something there that can be honed into a decent defensive midfielder.
Yeah, Andy, you said on the show last week that he, like Carl mentioned, he is seen as the future of Brazil's midfield. He wasn't first choice for Chelsea last season, really. He did make 43 appearances, though, in the end, but only 13 starts in the Premier League. So how do you feel about this being now seemingly the first midfielder through the door?
I'm actually quite optimistic about watching him develop and really annoy Chelsea fans. I don't think that playing for Brazil is quite the seal of approval that it was years ago, having watched him bow out of the World Cup. But as I said last week, he's not the perfect signing because he would have 100 Premier League games rather than the number of games that he's got. I wouldn't hold it too much against him. That he wasn't first choice all the time for Chelsea in the same way that I wouldn't hold it against Matias Fernandes that he played for a team who was relegated. I'm just thinking this is young Anderson coming from Brazil and bag full of energy. It was put to me, as I said on the pod last week, amazing football brain.
And one for the future. Should Manchester United be signing players for the future when the team needs to get into the Champions League now? Again, and ideally push for a league title within a couple of years. Well, yes and no. If he ends up being the first choice midfield signing, then I'm sure there'll be criticism of that. But I don't think he will be. I think he will come in alongside two or three other midfield players and I'm pretty comfortable with that. I think... He should get loads of support.
