Carl Anka 0:01
The Athletic FC.
Ian Irving 0:21
This is Talk The Devils, the athletic show dedicated to Manchester United. Coming up today, United back in action over the weekend, beginning pre-season with a defeat to Wrexham. We'll get into all the details of that, including the first sight of Andre Santos in red. We'll have a World Cup round-up after that came to a close on Sunday. Lissandro Martinez's campaign ends with defeat in the final and another injury. plus a more considered reaction this time around to Uri Tielemann signing for Manchester United. And we also asked the question, who might be next? Okay, on the show today, Laurie Whitwell, Andy Mitten, Karl Anka. How are we all doing, Karl? And Andy, you are in different states on your way back from Helsinki.
Ian Irving 1:02
Karl, very much back, but Andy's still there.
Andy Mitten 1:04
I'm still here. I'm going to travel across to the next game and I'm going to stay in the Nordic countries to do that. So I got her on Thursday, allowing plenty of time for the game. Unlike Carl, who turns up at like four minutes to kick off because he doesn't understand the concept of like passport control, especially Brexit and airport security. He just thinks it's like getting on a bus and he'll walk out the airport and Manchester United will just be playing right in front of him and then he can go home. Is that fair, Carl? He's not wrong. Come on, defend your corner here, Carl. Come on.
Ian Irving 1:37
They only spent about 12 hours in Helsinki altogether,
Carl Anka 1:41
didn't you? The flight was scheduled for me to land two hours before two hours, where you're supposed to turn up two hours before kickoff. Flight got delayed on takeoff
Laurie Whitwell 1:50
and
Carl Anka 1:51
then delayed getting off the plane as well. So once I get through airport security, the airport security guard was very confused. He's like, how long are you staying in Helsinki? I'm gone tomorrow morning. I was like, why? He said, well i've got to do world cup final stuff and other things in my life and he's like strange man off you go and i just took an uber straight from the airport to the helsinki olympic stadium wonderful stadium
Laurie Whitwell 2:13
it is wonderful with its art deco touches why have you given andy the chance uh to carl why have you opened that door
Ian Irving 2:19
oh no right let's move it on quickly let's
Laurie Whitwell 2:22
build deflection
Ian Irving 2:23
andy what's the main takeaway aside from the art deco touches on the stadium
Andy Mitten 2:27
Oh, on the stadium? No, no, no. Okay, so United lost the game. A Manchester United fan, Mancunian Sam Smith, a very close friend of Marcus Rashford, scored the goal. You know, I spoke to several of the Manchester United people after the match, the players and that, and they're like, look, this is... I'm not saying it's a fitness test, but the first game of preseason is often like this. There were moments, you know, when we can pick them out as well. But Wrexham were more advanced in their preseason preparation. They played a game in Poland last week and it just really showed. So that's me being all sensible about it. The other side is 20,000 people. Wasn't full, by the way. Ticket prices were expensive. It's not unreasonable for them to expect some form of entertainment and some goals.
Andy Mitten 3:14
And when there's none of that, it just detracts from the whole thing.
Ian Irving 3:18
Karl, you've written obviously a little bit of a review, I suppose, of the first game of pre-season. Andre Santos was the focus of it or the main focus of it. What did you make of his debut, at least non-competitive debut for United?
Carl Anka 3:33
He's intelligent. He's intelligent and he's good at mopping up messes. I think 90 seconds within the game, Wrexham surge forward and it's Santos making the recovery tackle. And there were two or three points in the first half. where Wrexham are manoeuvring the ball up wide, trying to do that cross, trying to do that pull-back pass towards the penalty spot, and it's Andre Santos cutting out that ball. So, nothing too spectacular. I couldn't give him more than a 7 out of 10, but then I couldn't give many United players more than a 6 out of 10. But that was the bit that stood out, just... He stood in the correct place where you want him to do for a lot of these phases of play.
